For my AOS package, I sent in my Birth Certificate, but I have heard that I needed to get a different type of birth certificate with both my parents names and or signatures on it. Has anyone of heard of this? I even asked my mother for this type of birth certificate and she says that the the one I sent in with my AOS is the only one she has and that Canadians don't have the type of birth certificate with both parents signatures/names on it. This is the same birth certificate I used to get my passport, OPT/EAD card and H1-B visa.

Can someone clarify this for me?

Thanks

Well yes Canadians do have this, its often called the long form birth certificate, it does have both the parents info on the birth certificate.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

You can get a long form and short form of a birth certificate in Canada. The "short form" is the wallet sized one, with just your name, place & date of birth. You were probably able to use that for your passport and most things up to this point in life.

The "long form" has all the same info, but also lists your birth parents. From my understanding, this is the form we need for the embassy interview and AOS. But, if you are sending your AOS forms in, you have probably gotten past the point of an interview (assuming you are going either K-1 or CR-1 marriage route), and have not been asked for the "long form", so maybe the short form will be sufficient.

You can order both forms online, at least in Nova Scotia. Try googling "birth certificate nova scotia/ontario/whatever your province is" and it should easily come up with the website for ordering it. The long form costs $35 CAD in NS and takes about 10 business days to arrive in the mail.

I hope this helps!

good luck!

Agree with all that's been said - most of us start out having the wallet sized Birth cert and you can also obtain the Long birth certificate.

You already sent your AOS in you said, but if you think you're going to get an RFE, why not go ahead and order the longer form from whatever province you were born in? It would be good to have for future and also just in case you need it now.

You sent the original in? Why not a copy? Maybe gthat's what you meant :) Those suckers are expensive.

I just sent in my AOS on 6/16/10. I haven't had an interview yet and USCIS is scheduled to receive my package tomorrow. I was on a H1-B and I just married an American citizen. I'm hoping the wallet size one works because I'm dreading any delays. If anyone else has been in shoes, please comment to let me know if you got through with the wallet sized birth certificate.

And, what is an RFE?

I'm new to this board and still learning the terminology.

Thanks

RFE = request for evidence

They will send an RFE if they feel you have insufficient/incorrect info.... I have no idea about AOS on H1-B visa, but I know for K-1 we need the long form.

Maybe someone here who has done AOS from H1-B will pipe up!

HI,

You need to order the long form birth certificate from http://www.serviceca...tificate.shtml. You will get a request for evidence if you haven't sent the long form in.

It has your parents names and place of birth on it. It looks like our 'funny" money and isn't very big compared to years ago as it is now encrypted.

The link will give you how to order it and pay for it over the phone which is the fastest way.good.gif

If you order it now you'll save yourself time and worrysmile.gif

Ordering the long form of the Birth Certificate takes only about 2 weeks time or less. Once they verify your registration they send it out pretty quickly.

It does indeed have both Mother and Father's name on the birth certificate and it also has a raised seal to identify it as the original.

As far as i know each province has their own place to issue the long form birth certificate! When i ordered mine from Sask. I had it in less than a week

The others are correct, it is called the LONG birth certificate.

It will cost you $30.

You need 1 person to verify you are who you say you are.

They have to be a person in a specific position that is registered with the province.

I used a high school teacher that I knew for 4 years, others that you can use include: doctor, lawyer, etc. [they give you a long list]

I filed for mine right from their website, they mailed it to me within two weeks.

They basically send you a certified copy of the original birth registry that your parent would have filled out.

ONTARIO: http://www.ontario.ca/en/services_for_residents/121591

OTHER: http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/subjects/cards/birth_certificate.shtml

I know where the Ontario one is, for the others you will have to navigate the website for it.

Good luck!

Will they mail it to me in the US or can they only send it to a Canadian address?

If so, I might have them send it to my brother's address in Toronto and then have him next day it to me.

Does anyone know if this will hold up my EAD card being sent to me?

Can I call or send this in to USCIS before they ask for it to make the process faster?

FireKari - that must be an Ontario rule, because when I ordered my birth cert from SK, I didn't have to have anyone verify anything for me. I just called, placed the order, gave my vital stats and paid for it.

Came in the mail approx 10 days later.

SWEET -- That's not fair. =(

Must be then, because either online or on phone they wanted the persons information.

Ontario stuff is all kinds of messed up.

Congrats on the expedite - must be nice not to have to wait like the rest of us.

W8N -- If you want it mailed to the USA I would call them and even ask if they will.

That would be the easiest way to correctly find out.
