You've obviously never been to downtown Detroit, Philadelphia, Newark or Los Angeles.

Hey dont get me wrong I love the UK. The UK is the most Americanized country in Europe.

On a serious note, yes we have our problems and I think its more of a border issue than a issue of law abiding citizen allowing guns to get in the wrong hands.

It's true though - these types of stories are ten a penny in the US and I doubt the US having a larger population is adequate explanation.

Yes it more than that, drugs are a big contributor. It all comes down to border issues but way too many people want to focus on guns and not the border.

Man, they really should outlaw guns in UK so this sort of thing doesn't happen. I mean, if guns were illegal there, nobody would ever get killed by criminals using guns.

I think we'll just settle for these types of incidents being headline news and not merely one footnote among many such incidents. Meanwhile, US inner cities are rife with violence, fear and death.

But that's OK - because at least if someone breaks into your home to rape your wife and string you up by the thumbs to reveal the location of your horded wealth, you'll be ready for them!

Hmm. So if inner cities are rife with violence, fear and death, maybe we should make those things illegal.

Yeah, I don't think I'll be headline news, probably more of a footnote because here in the States when someone defends their home with a firearm and saves their family from a criminal act, it barely gets mentioned in the news. For some reason, they don't seem to care about that sort of thing. Probably not good for someone's agenda when guns are used in a lawful manner for one of their Constitutionally protected purposes.

The attempt at humour there is painful.

I don't buy that.

That was not an attempt at humor. Mayor Daley and his cronies in the Mayors Against Illegal Guns are doing all they can to outright ban guns in their cities. Yet their cities, which already have the highest instances of gun violence - and already outlaw illegal guns - are doing more to make it "more illegal" than it already is, even in other places that don't have the same level of problems.

Why is that? Why do some people buy into the "more illegal" aspect of gun bans and registrations? It obviously doesn't work in the UK and it obviiously doesn't work in places like Chicago yet, for whatever reason, we're constantly hearing about this in the media. Why?

I don't buy that.

You don't have to buy it because I'm not selling it. It's a fact. The media does not report instances of people using guns in a lawful manner with the same frequency as they report on criminals using them illegally.

if it is even covered, it's certainly not on the front page.

The problem here is that you cry failure simply because you read a story in the news about a gun crime.

Bad news sells. News editors don't care that a homeowner held a gun on a burglar until police arrived (usually the focus in those stories is on the homeowner being old or disabled) or if someone avoided being "almost" shot. It's a more interesting story when there are bodies on the ground.

if it is even covered, it's certainly not on the front page.

Well it wouldn't be.

"Man holds burglar at gunpoint until police arrive" isn't exactly a sexy headline.
