By the way, I taught in a Gymnazium in the CR. That's a school for students who were undecided about which direction they wanted to pursue and/or students who planned to attend the university. The housing I was provided was above the "hospitality" high school, though if you've been to the CR, at least more than a decade ago, when I lived there, you know they must not have taught much in that school.

I actually like a system like that, though it is unrealistic in the US due to costs and the size of the country. But some variation of such a system would be fantastic. We are slowly working our way toward that, but so far, all such programs that I'm aware of are very superficial and don't address the problems I've alluded to in this thread.

And I actually did have a neighbor named Skoda, though it was in a neighboring classroom, not in a neighboring apartment. It's a common name in the CR. I think I might have even had a couple of students with that name. I'll have to dig out the "yearbook."

Besides, they go to school when it snows in Moscow, you couldn't handle it.

In the CR, I actually walked to and from work in snow and subzero temperatures and in the pitch dark. I had the clothing and the boots for it. I wouldn't expect to pluck an African child and drop him in the CR, not provide him with the clothes or shoes, and still expect him to walk to school in such weather. AND school would be canceled in the CR when there was an inversion. We've NEVER had an inversion here in the South.

Sorry for my ignorance ...what is an inversion?

A cost-cutting proposal originally aimed at eliminating the 12th grade in Utah has been revised to instead allow students to graduate from high school earlier.

State legislators are studying the proposal over the summer to decide whether to move forward on it, a spokesman for the Utah school board told FoxNews.com.

State Sen. Chris Buttars made the proposal in February as the state faced a $700 million shortfall, saying seniors are usually out to lunch during their last school year. After teachers and parents voiced opposition, Buttars toned the proposal down and presented it as "accelerated graduation," school board spokesman Mark Peterson said.

Buttars has said the move could save up to $60 million. Buttars was not able to comment due to an illness, his wife told FoxNews.com.

Peterson said the earliest lawmakers can take action on the proposal is January when the next session begins.

"It hasn't died," he said. "But it's not being actively pursued."

Why Not? Them Mormons are really smart.

I didn't read all of the post, but wanted to add my thoughts on the schools here in the US.

Moving from Canada I expected the schools to be a lot different. What I didn't expect was that the school's here are set up in a way that sabotage the kids that have any type of learning disabilities. They say they have all kinds of help for them, but it is very much lacking. I can't say its the same in every school across the US but I doubt there's much difference.

We tried the schools here and it did not last. I pulled them out. Very long story, the short part was the teachers were abusive, and also would not follow the recommended IEPs that were implemented by their own schools.

Anyways I agree with the posts about how not all kids are college bound, and how the schools don't help these kids. They drop out because they get frustrated, cause they are not being taught things that interest them. When in Canada my kids were taught all the basics classes like they have here, but they had the opportunity to learn woodworking, auto mechanics, cooking, welding and many more classes that help kids stay focus on staying in school. Now don't get me wrong I have every intention of all 4 kids going to College, and the oldest actually starts this year he is taking a 4 year course. He wants to be and Ichthyologist. But if I would of left them to the terrible school system here, I believe the 3 kids who struggle in school would of dropped out. They would of been made to feel like failures, they would of given up hope and lost the feeling of being able to grow up and be happy. Not all kids want to grow up to be Doctor's some kids want to be Crane Operators, welders, and carpenter. Remember without these ppl, the world would stop.

I home school all 4 kids and its the best thing I could of done since moving here. The schools here would of crushed their souls, their individuality, they would of turned them into little robots.

I shortened this a bit, hopefully it still makes sense.
