Sorry if someone else has already asked this but I have searched and read the guides and I am still so confused.

Ok so this what I understand of it so far (I have taylored it to my circumstances) Please can someone correct me if I have missed anything or have got anything wrong.

I fly in on my K-1 Visa on the 2nd July

My fiance and I get married 10th July (the Kentucky marriage license site has no mention of needing a SSN number)

19th June Apply for SSN in married name at local office(I read on VJ that this should be 15 days after POE to make sure that I am on the system)

Here is my first question, is this right? And how long does it take to get my SSN from the day i go in to the local offce to apply?

Ok so then I get my SSN open a joint bank account and stuff and fill in the I-693 Form. Is this the only form?

Where does the EAD come into play? I heard that you can apply before AOS for an EAD but is this worth it?

How long does it take to get you AOS so you can work?

The we get called in for an AOS interview. Where is this interview and how long does it take to get an interview/be able to work?

Thanks for your help I am just so confused.

Hi there! You should apply for SSN in your maiden name. If you apply in your married name, you will not be in their database. Once you do your AOS, you can change your SSN name. You should wait couple of weeks after you move to go get your SSN. FOr your AOS, I693 is only one of the forms you have to send in (this is your vaccination supplement form). The rest of the forms and all the instructions are listed here: http://www.visajourney.com/content/adjustmentforms You will send all those forms together, and wait for your interview. EAD will hopefully come before your green card. It takes about 2-3 months on average to get your EAD. I sent my AOS at the end of March and I just got my AOS interview date for end of June but I haven't heard anything about EAD yet. I'm hoping it will be here early June. I hope this helps some and if you have any other questions, ask.

Just like with the K-1, VJ has an excellent guide for this process: http://www.visajourney.com/content/k1k3aos :)

Also very helpful is Vanessa's comprehensive thread about applying for AOS, EAD & AP: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/235331-aos-ead-ap-from-k1-the-aussie-way-doc-list-included/

Good luck!!! :)

I suggest, on Day 16, past POE date, or thereabouts - that you apply for SSN card at SSA office in visa name.

Then, about day 60 , past POE date, go back to SSA office, have 'name amended', to show the married name.

IMO, that's the easiest way to handle it. IMO, anything else is a cr@pshoot .

YMMV, greatly, depending on the SSA office staff and their understanding of the SAVE database.

Good Luck !

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

And yes there is no requirement in Kentucky for a ssn. They just enter 000-00-0000 ( i think) if you don't have one. You can get the license and be married in the same day. I would advise applying for the SSN about 1-2 weeks after you arrive in your maiden name and when you receive your EAD you can have it changed then or wait until you receive your green card and get your new, clean SS card.

Congrats and good luck.
