She calls Warwick 'War - wick' instead of 'worick'

I hope to take her to Towcester (toaster) one day. I will stop a mile short and get her to ask directions

I have yet to find a USC that can do 'Edinburgh'

It's usually edin - bo - ro

It should be 'edin-bruh'

Last week she discovered that England has a Boston and wondered why it had been named after an American City

Despite pronunciation, she has deciphered much Yorkshire Tyke so my private conversations are private no longer.

eg 'Whistle atter look sharp'

I loved the Guy Ritchie movie with Brad Pitt as an "unlicensed Pikey boxer" - they had subtitles under his kisser for the Pikey slang.

  • 4 weeks later...

It took about 5 min. last night to figger out what she was saying, because she omitted the context.

When I heard the context, what I realized that she was trying to say was....

MANDATORY!

She was talking about an upcoming staff meeting at one of her jobs.

She was also at the "Boar's Head" website, practicing

"mortadella & prosciutto"

for her job at the deli counter.

I'm the USC and my husband (JimandChristy) has several words that drive me nuts!

Nicaragua (Nee-kaar-AAG-YOU-waa)

Nissan (nehss-in)

Fajita (faa-GEE-ta)

And WHY do Brits have to overelaborate certain food terms? Like we can't have Spaghetti, we have "Spaghetti Bolognaise."

and "Chili Con Carne" and never just Chili.

But that accent...oooh...

I don't know if this word is mispronuounced most often, but it's probably one of my favorites (correct or otherwise.)

Any word that begins with a "v"... Wacuum, walley, west (vest), Wirginia, etc.

Or that begins with a "w"...veird, vest (west), volf, etc.

I love it.

Heck I never heard of 'Pikey ' though I ran into a lot of Irish 'Travellers' when I was working for the Queen 1968 to 1974. I doubt any actor could capture how feral those guys are.

Before I saw "Snatch" I never heard the term "caravan" used for "trailer."

Hmm. I wonder if the Dodge Caravan is marketed under that name in the UK....

I though 'RV' was a Yiddish exclamation.

Never a day goes by without my Mrs and I learn a new word from English or American (usual old English words that have survived here). It's like a trip back to 1776.

A tow bar is a trailer hitch. I saw 'I had my car toed away' online yesterday, but I don't think it's regular American.

At my Naturalization interview I was asked about my Mrs and I said I met her in Milwaukee and she was a Packer fan. The interviewer sat up straight and said "She is from Pakistan ?????"

What I need is voice recognition software (Yorkshire edition) that writes the words on the TV screen when she is watching HLN. 'Nathen are lass - whistle atter look sharpish or us snap 'll be cawd'. What could be plainer than that ?
