Hey - Singapore does it - why not do it in the USA? Singapore happy to sell 'one time use rights' of their ID system - no fuss, no muss.

Yes, and I oppose such. Just give NATURALISED citizens (and born citizens who so request) a permanent ID card that states that the holder is US citizen (as you can guess, this idea is pilfered from northern neighbour Canada).

US also has about 120 times the population of Singapore, of which a heavy percentage are non-citizens.

Existing immigration law (where a non-citizen is required to carry proof of visa/status at all times) if enforced rigourously would work. How about instead of Singapore, we use US' northern neighbour Canada as example instead. A citizenship card is mandatorily (though it need not be carried at all times) issued to NATURALISED citizens, and optionally to BORN IN COUNTRY citizens; why the US does not implement such (example--such ID would be nicer when used for first-time pasport app) is a mystery to me.
