OK, so between getting my wife who was my fiancee (k-1 visa) here, starting a new job, trying to plan a wedding in 3 months and finding an apartment. I got a little behind with SOP of the AOS process.

Basically, We got married 2 weeks ago, yesterday we found an apartment but we had a little problem with the rental office because they wanted for my wife to have a SS# so we went to the S.S. office today and they said she couldn't receive a SS card because we are married now. The rental office agreed that she could be put on the lease as an occupant but not a renter being that they can't do a credit check on her w/out a SS#.

This is a bit confusing to me now. Won't I have to show to to the USCIS that we are living together? And that we have joint accts, lease contracts, etc... and if so, How do I do this w/out her having a SS card?

So I'm a bit confused to what happens from here.

We are sending the application for the greencard, AP, and EAD next week. We had to wait to get an appointment from the civil surgeon here to complete one of the missing vaccinations and fill out the I-693. Her I-94 expires on the 15th of April. Do we just have to wait until she get her greencard now to get a SS card?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Unless your I-94 has expired the person you talked to was wrong. She can indeed get one even though she is now married, and theres a few things on there (I think under guides) and on the SSN website that says so. You may have to get it in her maiden name first and then change it, but she is definately allowed to get one.

If the I-94 is expiring soon, you won't be able to get a ssn until you have EAD. I think your I-94 cannot expire something like 30 days before the day you are applying. In any case, your wife's is about to expire, so you will have to wait for EAD. Things are moving pretty fast right now. You probably (but not necessarily) will have your EAD before the interview is scheduled at which time you have to prove that you are living together. Or you may get approved without an interview. You don't have to provide that kind of evidence before the interview, so I would file ASAP and go to SS office as soon as you have EAD in hand.

The time is actually 14 days, if it expires in 14 days you can't get it, anything prior to that you can, unless your local SSN office is a bit...uninformed. Taking the sheet though that says that you can get one should help.

Chris, I think they refused you because Zhanna's I-94 is going to expire in a week (I go by your timeline).

I think you are SOL now without EAD. I might be wrong.

Слава Україні!

Yeah if its going to expire that soon you won't be able to get it until her EAD comes through (or her GC, whichever is faster).

Thanks everyone for your responses. We appreciate your time and help. I think we're just gonna have to wait for the EAD. We're sending the AOS package this tues after Zhanna gets the I-936 filled out by the civil surgeon on monday.

The Apt place will let me put Zhanna on as an occupant on the lease and then will let her put on the lease after she gets a SS card.

Thanks again, we really do appreciate it!
