Oh, well a hamburger contains on average 100 picograms of dioxin. We better tax that to death next! Tuna? You bet! It has mercury so that needs a large tax too. Salmon? Well if its "atlantic" then its really just farmed and has pesticides and growth hormones. Tax that B!tch!

On then there is canned foods, bagged popcorn, pretty much all non organic fruit and veg, wheat?, most baked goods, all fried foods, non free range chicken, US bread...........................

Its has similar calorie content to soda unless its 2% or skim. What I'm getting at is....should the government be deciding what is frivolous and unnecessary in our diets? I think we could have a very simple diet of rice/veg. with water and milk, the government could potentially tax everything else...thats why I'm generally against "nanny" taxing.

It's not nanny taxing, it's punitive taxation and on something like soda or sweets which play no part in a healthy diet, it's a good idea. Milk is full of useful nutrients, it's readily available and affordable to produce.

No, food is essential to human life and should not be punitive taxed in so far as raw ingredients are concerned and nor should water for the same obvious reasons. Soda however is not essential or desirable in any diet. It's something we like to consume but is in fact counterproductive to health.

You can say this about any food stuff. People do not need beef for instance. All food can lead to a rubbish diet.

No, you can't. Take beef, while it is true that you do not need to eat beef, you do need to eat some foods that contain the nutrients that beef provides. Soda on the other hand contains nothing that we need to survive and we don't need to get it in another form.
