Can I claim my fiancee as a dependent for 2009 taxes?

Howdy,

I supported my sweetie for all of 2009, but of course she wasn't here in the US. Anyone know if I can claim her as a dependent for tax purposes for last year? If so, is there anything special I need to do? She doesn't have a SSN yet... I have receipts for all the money sent though. I've never claimed a dependent before :P

If I can't claim her due to non-citizenship, is there some other way I can deduct those expenses? Last year might be rough on me as far as taxes go, so I'm looking for all the options to lessen the blow.

It's funny how I earned a lot less money last year than in any of the preceding several years, due to the recession, and find myself in a position where I'm probably going to owe taxes instead of getting a return.

Anyways, thanks in advance. :)
