The Earned Income Tax Credit gave taxpayer money to people who didn't pay any taxes at all. That was pretty damn socialist. You can thank (yes, thank - not blame) Reagan for that.

Somebody apparently wasn't paying attention for the last 30 years.

I was 5 when he first became President. I wasn't paying attention at the time either. But thankfully, our knowledge of past events isn't limited to things we know from experience. There are written histories available to us and we get to read them.

i must admit that i am speaking from a platform of the ill-informed on the specifics of this particular socialism but knowing what i do about reagan id have to question how much of the blame lie with him and how much belongs with the congress he had to work with. im a bit confused as to why anyone should thank anyone for this because it is a burden on people who work to the benefit of people who don't. i guess the people who dont work should be thanking someone but these are the people that we need to eject no sustain. no i dont mean the old or disabled, i refer to able bodied and minded people that have decided for multiple generations to do as little work as they can get away with while drawing a maximum benefit.

May I ask - how old were you when Reagan was first elected President?

Might be interesting to see exactly what that tax credit was during ReaGANS time and note how it went from an idea to take the tax burden off the poor to..... a "cash payout" to the poor.

Another example of how well intentioned laws morph into the unrecognizable.

No need to latch on to anyones "outside" ideas if you want to work for repealing this Bill.

As for people having the freedom to "live life the way you want"..... come'on now, thats freshman year idealism.

There never has been nor will there ever be a time when all people have the freedom to live as they want, ... and the only reason you said that was... you live in a society which protects you from that very thing so it's easy to muse what it would be like.

actually it had more directly to do with the video clip you included.

It was never intended to "take the tax burden off the poor". Even at that time, it gave "refunds" to people who had zero tax liability.

my bday is 11/10/75 so you do the math

LOL...ok, so you were too young to remember, however, what stopped you from learning your U.S. History?

Almost 24 years ago, as he signed into law the tax bill expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit, President Ronald Reagan hailed it as “the best anti-poverty, the best pro-family, the best job creation measure to come out of Congress.”

Tort reform and deportation, not amnesty, for illegals. When these become reality, and healthcare costs self adjust downward due to reduced burden I'd be more than willing to discuss punishments for insurance company rip-offs. Are there profiteers that might have a small hand in lining their pockets on the backs of policy holders? probably. would I like to see them taken down a notch? sure. Do they deserve to suffer the wrath of over-zealous libs who are intent on putting them out of business completely? HELL NO!

Yes I am American, and my wife is Irish and we both plan to be dual citz at some distant date in the future. As far as their system is concerned it does seem to have some merits in the way of catastrophic care, however, how much of it is paid for by their 22% VAT on every single consumer item including food and clothing, even higher on luxury items. Oh yes trust me America will soon have a VAT to pay for this behemoth. They still clearly haven't figured it all out because many hospitals have closed in the last 10 years. Because the Ennis maternity ward in closed residents of some parts of Co Clare have to be taken for an hour plus long ride in an abulance to the nearest ward which is in Limerick.

since you brought it up, and this is an immigration website after all, i would like to take the opportunity to point out something that ireland got right, that is relevant to this discussion, and has a direct effect on the over all health care costs that we all pay. in 2002 ireland ended birthright citizenship, which means that people who came to ireland, either legally or illegally, could not simply give birth and poof instant citizen. even 2 irish citizens who have lived in ireland since birth need to "apply" for citizenship for their newborn. gee guess what, this reduces the ammount of people who work off the books, do not pay into the system, and yet take full advantage of the services. if this country JUST did that 1 small thing health care costs would drop significantly, but oooooo youre a racist if you talk about these things. BS!!!!!

as i become more incensed over the abuses of the current incarnation of the US government I am slowly learning as I go along. i am aware of the addage that people who do not study history are doomed to repeat it, but i do have a disability that makes the physical act of reading difficult so its a slow process. in my adult life i have not felt encroached upon to the point of caring what the govt was doing but this outright attempt to destroy private industry has woken me up and i will never go to sleep again.

Illegal immigrants are not eligible for Medicaid, nor will they be allowed to buy health insurance in the exchanges -- even if they pay completely with their own money. So what specifically about this health care bill that you are against?

admitedly i have not yet formulated a constitutional way to eject these parasites but i would start by cutting the umbilical cord into hard working americans that never asked for anything other than the ability to make their own destiny.
