My fiancee got her passport so she can come to the US. Her Russian name is spelt correctly in Russian but it seems they added an extra letter in English. I was wondering if that would be a problem since the 129F papers I submitted dont have this extra letter. I called the embassy and they said its not a problem but they were too quick to answer and seemed like they wanted me to get off the phone. Any ideas?

Extra letters and different letters in Russian to English translation are very common. You shouldn't have any problem.

I filed the I-129F with my wife's name as Svetlana and my son as Vladimir... When I finally saw the passports it was transliterated Svitlana and Volodymyr... Needless to say they are here without issue... The consulate will issue the visa in the name in English as spelled in the passport

YMMV

I've had that problem when i came here 10 years ago and now am a citizen. As long as you just use these exact names when you apply for AOS/Citizenship later on - no problems

haha great so her name will forever have a K in it :-) I was wondering if it will be a problem when she changes her last name to mine for the AOS/Citizenship thing? Will her last name still need the K or will it be my last name when applying for the AOS/Citizenship?

They were quick to answer because it happens all the time and I knew you were a Russian or Ukrainian applicant before opening the thread. Alla translates Russian documents and it happens all the time. in fact there is no "correct" way to spell your fiancee's name in English. Just as there is no correct way to spell a Chinese or Arabic name, it is a transliteration, a phonetc spelling of the name using letters we use to simulate letters they use. Hence...Oksana/Oxana, Tatiana/Tatyana, Natalia/Natalya, Sergey/Sergei/Sergii, Pavel/Pavlo etc. Not a problem. We rarely find any case with all the names translated the same, sometimes even different spellings on the same document. Throw in Ukrainian and Belarussian preferences in spelling (and slight differences in alphabet) and you get a confusing mish-mash of possible spellings. Alla just asks people up front how it is spelled in their passport and uses that. At least she TRIES for consistency. :help:

The consulate will accpet any resonable spellingof the name on any document (they do not even have to be the same on all documents) and they will issue the visa in her name as in the passport. if she does not like how her name is spelled in the passport, change it in the passport before her interview. There is no other way to do it. The name on the passport will transfer to her visa/green card/drivers license/SS card, so if she really doesn;t like it, change it in the Russian passport now.

It will unless she changes it in her Russian passport before the interview.

Ahh great! Well thats a relief. I told her about it and she doesnt mind having the extra letter. When we get married and she changes her last name will the new last name (my last name) present a problem for the AOS/Citizen forms?

Not neccesarily... My wife changed the spelling of her name to Svetlana when we were married, adopted a middle name and changed her last name... No issues for us so far... her GC is in the spelling that she wanted.

I see. So when we get married she can change her last name to mine? When we fill out the papers will we have to fill out with the new name or will we have to use the name on her passport?

She can change her name to yours after marriage, yes. You will use the name you want on the green card. If the spelling of her FIRST name is different, be sure to make a point of that.

No its just the spelling of the last name that has the extra letter. So when I fill out the AOS it will have her first name and her last name then correct and no mention of her previous last name?
