David Jones was chatting with a manager at a Farmers & Merchants Bank in Long Beach on Friday when a man wearing a red motorcycle helmet and a black leather outfit barreled through the door, pulled out a gun and started shooting.

Jones froze. People began screaming and falling to the floor. In the chaos, Jones watched as another male customer grabbed the suspect and wrestled his gun away.

Jones quickly realized the customer had been shot in the thigh, and the suspect was wiggling away, so he jumped on top of the man. His hand brushed against another gun underneath the suspect's jacket and he threw the weapon across the floor.

"It was the wildest experience," said Jones, 48. "It happened so fast."

Three people, including the suspect, Robert Gordon Lockwood, 51, of Long Beach, were shot and wounded during the botched robbery, said Lisa Massacani, a spokeswoman for the Long Beach Police Department. It's unclear how each of the victims or Lockwood were shot, authorities said.

The drama began when police responded about 10:30 a.m. to a report of a robbery at the community bank in the 2200 block of Bellflower Boulevard, Massacani said.

If someone had their CPL, no customers could've been injured.

Cops who've had way more training have made tragic mistakes using a gun. Thinking that someone carrying a weapon automatically would result in a more positive outcome is foolish.

Yea, but we all know most cops can't shoot worth a darn.

...and you think every Tom, ####### and Harry with CWP has not only the necessary accuracy but also knows how to respond in emergency situations? Heck...let's just make them all honorary deputies.

police get there in time to draw the chalklines. most criminals caught in the act are caught by armed and unarmed citizens. google it if you don't believe me.

Yea, what is a cop (who shouldn't use his firearm) going to do if he were there? "Freeze. Police"!?

Where a civilian in the background (who doesn't pull out his gun & reveal it to the criminal like a cop would), puts a round in the guy to stop him & then wait for cops to come & do that part of their jobs.

The customers in this particular case were LUCKY it only ended with injuries.

I'm not suggesting people shouldn't have CWP or react when they are in a dangerous situation. I'm saying you're being presumptuous to believe that if there is someone with CWP who is armed, that it will lead to a more positive outcome every time. If an armed robber is in a crowded bank, there's a good chance there are innocent bystanders within the line of fire or behind the intended target for someone trying to take out the perpetrator using a gun. A cop, whether off duty who just happened to be there, or working as hired security vs. just a citizen with CWP, the cop is going to be much more qualified to respond to the situation. I know that doesn't jive well with a lot of gun advocates who, for whatever reason(s), have little faith in the professional aptitude of cops.

It is not at all automatic. It is proven by statistics. Armed citizens prevent over 2 million crimes every year , by far most, without ever firing a shot. Concealed carry has reduced crime in every jurisdiction it has been introduced.

Unlike police, who get called into situations that they do not know, have witnessed or understand, the armed citizen is there and clearly understands just who the bad guy is. It just simply is something that cannot be debated after more than 25 years of experience in 41 states. Anyone doing so is a fool. There being no shortage of fools, the debate can continue.

Washington DC has experienced a 25% drop in homocide after just being forced to allow the ownership of handguns, not even concealed carry. Something the liberal Democrat politicians who have run Washington DC for decades could never do, despite an armed police department. rather than be excited about a 25% drop in homocide and probably losing forever the title of "murder Capital" of the USA, the police are not happy, but instead make excuses so that we do not believe what the statistics tell us. If the facts don't fit the theory, change the facts. Good liberals they are. Once the Supreme Court strikes down ridiculous laws like Chicago's we can expect to see further drops in crime. Reductions in crime are a good thing.
