Is there a minimum number of days to wait to request tax transcripts after you file your taxes? or can I file taxes tomorrow and once its accepted be able to request a transcript?

I searched online and just couldn't find the correct answer.

I guess you can call and request them and see what they tell you over the phone. Prepare a copy of the tax returns you filed in case they tell you that it is not yet available, so you can include the copy with your evidence.

When we filed for ROC, we just sent in copies of all the pages of our returns and we even forgot to include our W2s and we still got approved.

You should include a cover letter and in there, you can explain that this return has been filed and not yet on record since you called the IRS requesting a transcript.

v333k, If I called then I wouldn't be posting here but thanks for your suggestion.

Am not comfortable in sending all the pages of tax returns when only the transcript will suffice but will make copies of the returns and W-2s just in case.

Does anyone else know? I just dislike being on the phone for 30+ min waiting when I can search online or seek answers elsewhere.

Hi,

You also have the other option of not sending in 2009 tax returns. It is more important to show 2007 and 2008 as they know that a lot of people wait until April 15th to mail in their taxes so I doubt they will be expecting them.

We filed jointly for the first time in 2009(for year 2008) so only have 1 year of tax return that shows we were together.

Am hoping having two years of 'joint' tax returns will help during ROC since am getting ready to file end of this month.

Here is the answer for everyone:

1. Once a taxpayer electronically files his/her 2009 tax return, approximately how long does it take before the taxpayer can obtain copies of his/her tax transcripts directly from the IRS?

3 Weeks. The consumer can call 1-800-829-0922 to check to see if their transcript is available and request it directly from IRS at no cost. However, they must allow 10 days to receive it.

2. If the taxpayer mails their return, approximately how long should they expect to need to wait until they can obtain a copy of their transcript directly from the IRS?

6-8 weeks and times may extend longer after April 15th. The consumer can call 1-800-829-0922 to check to see if their transcript is available and request it directly from IRS at no cost. However, they must allow 10 days to receive it.

Last year I was able to request and receive tax transcripts for our 2008 returns 3 weeks after our returns were filed and accepted electronically. We filed early February. I expect that the closer it gets to April 15, however, the longer it might take to get the transcripts due to the increasing work load.

I am a little confused. If the greencard was received in August of 209 (based on your timeline) then you need to wait 2 years before filing for ROC.

Am I missing something here?
