Tancredo opens Tea Party Convention with a bang

From CNN Deputy Political Director Paul Steinhauser

Nashville, Tennessee (CNN) – Tom Tancredo opened what's being billed as the first Tea Party Convention with a bang.

The former congressman from Colorado and 2008 Republican presidential candidate blasted President Obama, saying "people who could not even spell the word 'vote', or say it in English, put a committed socialist ideologue in the White House. His name is Barack Hussein Obama."

Tancredo made his comments as he gave the kickoff speech for the convention, which is being held at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel and Convention Center in Nashville.

Tancredo's speech received polite applause among the 600 attendees at the convention.

"So the race for America is on right now. The president and his left-wing allies in Congress are going to look at every opportunity to destroy the Constitution before we have a chance to save it. So put your running shoes on. Because I'll tell you, I've heard we need a revolution. My friends, we already had it. We lost. I mean, what happened to us in that last election was a revolution," said Tancredo, discussing the 2008 presidential contest.

Tancredo also slammed that election's Republican presidential nominee, saying "thank God John McCain lost the election."

The former congressman known for his strong opposition to illegal immigration also attacked "the cult of multiculturalism, aided by leftists, liberals all over who don't have the same idea about America as we do."

A spokesman for the Tea Party Nation, the group that organized the convention, said Tancredo's speech may provide some red meat but termed it problematic.

"It doesn't further the dialogue," said Mark Skoda, a businessman and founder of the Memphis Tea Party, who is also serving as spokesman for the convention.

Tancredo ended his speech telling the crowd that "this is our country" and urged them "to take it back."

So in his opinion, increased voter turnout among minorities and people under 30 is tantamount to illiterate people who dont' know any better. Right Mr. Tancredo. On another note, only 600 attendees to the Tea Party Convention? I thought this movement was so much bigger than that.

If the tea party ever wants to be taken seriously, this is not a guy to be rallying behind.

I have a question though, what does the tea party really stand for?

They are so fractured at this point, I really wonder if anyone could answer that. Nobody has really been able to harness the malcontents of the republican party.

I just see it as movement to which conservatives are venting their anger/frustration. They can't admit that their own polices have screwed them, but are too conservative to consider any other options.

The movement will probably mostly dissipate once the economy recovers.

And if the economy takes longer than 3 more years to recover, it might transform the Republican primaries.

There's been some interesting talk on local public radio. The other day there were some tea party members who claimed that their cause is non-partisan. However, when asked what they stand for, one woman said they stand for less regulations and lower taxes. I personally have a sneaky suspicion that there are corporate plants who are tapping into the anger and frustration of many Americans who have suffered during this economic recession. People who are angry and they don't know where exactly to point the finger at, except government. Meanwhile Corporate America basically gets a free pass. How else can these tea baggers be talking about less regulation after the financial fallout? Baffling.

Yea, I saw Tancredo's comments this morning on CNN. It certainly doesn't help his causes (some of which are actually worthy) when he spouts off with demeaning comments such as those.

Danno, do you believe that the tea baggers can actually pull the moderate republicans to the right? I see the tea bag party and the liberal progressives driving more people towards an independant party, but thats just me.

This is obviously a liberal media misinterpretation of what dear old Tom said. Our fav VJ member VW has told us that he's a a real nice man who has no bigoted views at all. I am guessing that the 'idea of America' he favours is not dominated by white middle class males, but simply lets the cream rise to the top ;)

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

LoL, so we should not take his words verbatum and look for a much deeper interpretation? Where do I get the official Tom Tancredo Decoder Ring?

Well clearly you need to read the numbers.

In many cases it's not as much "moving them right" as it is replacing them with someone who is on the Right. Even John McCain is looking over his shoulder.

At any rate I think you will agree..... Anyway you cut it, every movement is in a rightward shift.

Some on the far Left moving to the middle and those in the middle going Right.

Kinda gives you hope no?

The majority of the republican party are not tea baggers. But I suppose you're right, if the tea baggers can force out the middle of the road candidates, they will canibalize their votes and hand elections to the democrats, or they are going to galvanize their position. Maybe it's because I live in California and you live in North Carolina, and we read vastly different political commentary that we see trends differently
