I am a US citizen and my wife who is from the Philippines is here in the US and has her green card. She is pregnant and wants to have the baby in the Philippines to save money. How much trouble will it be to bring our new son/daughter back to the US?

Relatively easy. The child is a US citizen by birth and able to get a US passport. The process starts with the CRBA (google it for her country)

The only issue is how long that process takes (there's paperwork to file) and how long her visa takes to get. Issue being, if she waits too long her spouse visa will become void before the US stuff for the baby is complete.

Start looking into it now so that as soon as she gives birth you can file the paperwork.

Good luck.

it sounds a little strange that you want to send her to phil to have the child to save money..of course it is possible, are you going with her? if not, wouldnt you want to be there for the birth? it is expensive just for the airfare to the philippines and back for the 3 of you..and how long is she planning on staying? because it would be difficult to travel back to america with a infant..anyway it wouldnt be that hard, but it would be easier if the child is born in the us..no paperwork to fill out at all..

Her pregnancy really caught us by surprise. We added her to my insurance policy, but did not add the pregnancy rider. A we'll have to pay 100%. The birth alone can cost $17,000.00. Heaven forbid there be any complications. round trip airfare for everyone, money to live on and medical bills there wouldn't be close to that.

Slap them with $10 a month in medical bills. You might be paying the rest of your life, but its not worth the sake of your wife and child. But whatever I suppose. On another hand you should check with the local government. In Kentucky they will issue a medicaid card for the wife, and to the child when s/he is born. It will pay some of the medical costs of having the baby and will lift some burden. Her being a permnant resident and you filing affadavit of support on her behalf may not fly to well. But its always something to check.

I don't get this : | people get their green cards and then want to leave and do everything in their home country. Don't know how many people I get, I want to leave and go back to India! "When did you enter?" ... "2 days ago."

they have birthing help for all people and even for people here on visas so you wouldnt be paying all the money for it but on the other hand if you do decide for her to go back there the cost can start at 29,000 php = $1,330 to 160,000 php = $7,360 and the hospitals arent that great there i know from exper.

and if the child is born there you can register the baby with the us embassy as a cgild born abroad to a us citizen the cost for that is $140 thats for the certificate and passport

so in my eyes its safer and cheaper here for the birth

Thank you to everyone that replied. We've done some research and have learned that it will probably not cost as much as I had originally feared. She'll be staying in the US of the birth.

We just got back from her dr appointment. The baby is due on Sept 9th and we'll find out the gender in a month. (we're hoping for a girl. The family is already full of little boys!)
