John Edwards says he's the father of Reille Hunter's child

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards has finally come forward to admit that he fathered a child with a videographer that he hired before his second White House bid.

Edwards confirmed this in a statement released to The Associated Press Thursday, after initially denying that he'd fathered a child during his affair with the videographer, Reille Hunter.

"I am Quinn's father," the former senator declared in his statement, as the second birthday of Frances Quinn Hunter approaches.

A former Edwards aide, Andrew Young, initially claimed paternity of the child shortly before the 2008 presidential primary contests began. Young is scheduled to release a book on Feb. 2 that details the scandal.

The author of the book, Game Change, was on Chris Matthews last Sunday and was talking about the John Edwards affair. Apparently, his wife knew there was something going on and that's when the mistress was taken off the campaign, but John kept seeing her in secret afterward. He was pretty delusional until the very end, even trying negotiate a deal with Obama that he'd quit the race and endorse Obama if promised a cabinet position. Pretty sad...especially for Elizabeth and his children.

I presume, as an adult, that Edwards knew what he was doing; weighed the risks and had the affair anyway - even knowing that if it came out that it would torpedo his career.

He can hardly be surprised about how it turned out, or claim some temporary insanity to suggest that he didn't really know what he was doing.
