Can You Speak Your Foreign SO's Native Language?

My spouse is a former Filipino citizen who grew up here.  She understands it but rarely speaks Filipino (we communicate in English all the time), unless we're traveling in a foreign country and deciding the best price for the item we're trying to buy and haggle. :D

Where is your wife from province wise and what does she speak? My wife is from Davao and speaks Bisaya and Tagalog. But she loves to meet other Bisaya people.

I am pretty good at reading Russian and have been learning it.  I told my wife that as soon as she has her N400 interview (a little less than two weeks away), we should start a deep dive, but until then she wants to work on her English.  Other than that, I have been using Rosetta Stone.

 

On a side note, I have colleague that is South Korean, and also living there.  His wife is Filipino, and I asked him if he spoke her language.  He said no, and that she doesn’t speak Korean either.  I asked how they communicate, and he said English.

I have seen that happen a lot in regards to Indians as well. I used to work with a lot of them in Afghanistan,  they would be from different regions of India  so they spoke different languages but spoke to each other in English. So a guy from the South who spoke Tamil and a guy from the North who spoke Hindi would have conversate in English because they don't want to learn each other's language. So this is why India still has English as the 2nd main language of India after Hindi.
