PARIS: The United Nations must investigate and clarify the dominant U.S. role in earthquake-ravaged Haiti, a French minister said Monday, claiming that international aid efforts were about helping Haiti, not ``occupying'' it.

U.S. forces last week turned back a French aid plane carrying a field hospital from the damaged, congested airport in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, prompting a complaint from French Cooperation Minister Alain Joyandet. The plane landed safely the following day.

...

"This is about helping Haiti, not about occupying Haiti,'' Joyandet, in Brussels for an EU meeting on Haiti, said on French radio.

...

The U.S. military controls the Port-au-Prince airport where only one runway is functioning and has been effectively running aid operations. However, the United Nations has stepped forward to take the lead in the critical task of coordinating aid.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Saturday the U.S. government had no intention of taking power from Haitian officials. "We are working to back them up, but not to supplant them,'' she said.

Joyandet said he expects a U.N. decision on how governments should work together in Haiti.

"The U.N. is working on it,'' Joyandet said, adding that he hopes "things will be clarified concerning the role of the United States.''

Both nations have occupied Haiti in the past.

Really, it has nothing to do with envy... UK & Europe pulled out of colonialism for good reason, they know it causes more harm than good...

You don't know much about international politics, do you Shani?

I know a fair bit, thanks. I'm not saying this is true, I'm saying IF it is.

Anyway, I don't think the US has any intention of taking over Haiti. I don't see any benefit to them of doing it, and that is not their MO. They are simply sending troops to help out (these people are highly trained) and keep the peace, and establish some semblance of order. The airport is down to one runway, and can not handle the volume of aid that is pouring in yet.

No, it's not 'my time of the month'. That is one sexist piece of ###### to imagine women have to be suffering from PMS when they choose not to sugar coat their responses.

On topic, I think if this were say Crete then the roles of support would reverse.

You mean between France and the US? Sorry if that seems like an obvious question, I am super tired today.

I am still stuck on France actually caring about something occurring elsewhere in the world.

I'm saying we are the largest country to help nearest to Haiti. Like Crete is to Greece and so on and logistically it makes sense.

I realize France probably would want to lead since Haiti is her former colony.

And the brokest!

If there was no fuel to safely get out of Haiti after the French aircraft landed I would also tell them not to come there... its not all about having good intentions.. its about how they play a role in the big picture... assume they landed and realized they didnt have fuel to leave... that leaves them in the way of others needing to come and go to that very limited space on the tarmac... fuel and timing are the only limiting issue I can see... international politics has no place in this situation..
