If you were in the far left, even if you ran the red light, you still wouldn't have created a safety hazard for crossing traffic.

The object of the exercise is to stop if it is safe to do so, not run the red light if it is safe to do so. A small, but crucial difference. ;)

Very true however, those who argue it is for safety are absolutely incorrect.

Typically, when you read from the website of the company that installs such devices, you'll get data to support their side.

I agree. That's why I avoided those sites. I am equally hesitant to believe what a wannabe local politician says during a radio interview.

Are you suggesting that running red lights is not a hazardous practice? If that's what you are saying, you are nuts.

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

I paid that $125 ticket because the letter referred me to a website where I could actually watch the video of this infraction... I clearly did not come to a complete stop at a red light before turning right, even though there was no traffic in sight, Anywhere, even though I knew I was no threat to anyone on the road at that moment, the law is clear, so I didn't think I had grounds to appeal the fine... also I didn't know anything about the system here and how it works as this was my first ever traffic ticket and I thought I'll just pay it and get it over with...

If it doesn't get reported on my driving record and the evidence is clear, I'll gladly pay the fine. I just hope it isn't much more than that. :)

VJ Folks here are giving the police a BIG pass. The foto enforcement is ALL about generating tax dollars, and NOT public safety. They are tax collectors with guns. Wake up, people!

I didn't read this whole thread, but will give you the info I got after receiving the notice of violation in the mail, maybe it's helpful...

I got no points, it was a civil infraction: "Red Zone Infraction (Failure to stop at red light)" Civil Penalty Fine of $125.00

Most Asked Questions

Q: What is a red light running violation?

A: A red light running violation occurs when a motorist enters an intersection after the traffic signal has turned red. Motorists already in the intersection when the signal changes to red, when waiting to turn for example, are not considered red light violators.

Q: Why did I receive this Notice of Violation?

A: Based upon images captured by the automated system, your vehicle was determined to have committed a red light violation. As the owner of the vehicle the Notice of Violation is mailed to you.

Q: What is the fine?

A: A $125.00 civil fee will be assessed for each offense.

I do not believe I ran a red light. Where can I go to view my images and video?

You can view your images on any computer with an Internet connection. Log on to www.ViolationInfo.com. To log on to the site you must enter the Notice Number and the PIN # located at the top right corner of your Notice of Violation.

Will I receive any points on my driving record for this violation?

No, this is a civil infraction that is not reported to the Florida Department of Motor Vehicles.

Will my insurance rates be affected?

No, this is a civil infraction and is not reported to any insurance agencies.

I don’t believe I ran a red light and want to discuss my case with someone.

A person who receives a Notice of Violation may contest the imposition of the civil by requesting, by mail, an appeal for a Hearing within 30 days after the receipt of the Notice of Violation. Your request must be received by the Due Date on the front of the Notice.

How can I schedule a hearing?

You must sign the attached coupon at the bottom of the Notice and mail it in the enclosed envelope. An administrative hearing will be scheduled and you will be notified of the location, date and time of your hearing. Failure to pay a civil penalty or to contest liability by the due date on the notice is an admission of liability in the full amount of the civil penalty stated on the notice of violation and constitutes a waiver of the right to appeal under Section 2007-26-132 of the city ordinance. If you are found liable at the administrative hearing or you request a hearing and thereafter fail to appear at the time and place of the hearing, you will be liable for the amount of the penalty. If you are found liable for the civil penalty after an administrative adjudication hearing, you will be required to pay the civil penalty immediately plus a $60.00 court costs.

Can I make a hearing request over the phone?

No, all requests must be submitted in writing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Traffic Light Safety Program

Why has the City of Miami Gardens decided to implement the Traffic Light Safety Program?

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, annually nearly 2 million crashes occur in intersections. In 2005, red light running resulted in 800 fatalities and over 165,000 injuries.

It is believed that an automated red light camera program will reduce the number of red light crashes and injuries associated with such crashes. The purpose of this program is to increase traffic safety in the City of Miami Gardens. The goal of the program is to reduce red light running violations, red light crashes, and red light injury crashes without impacting city funds.

What is a red light running violation?

Pursuant to the City of Miami Gardens Ordinance 2007-26-132, it is a violation of the red light when a motor vehicle is facing a traffic control signal's steady red light indication shall stop before entering the crosswalk on the near side of an intersection or, if none, then before entering the intersection and shall remain standing until a green indication is shown on the traffic control signal; provided, however, the driver of a motor vehicle which is stopped at a clearly marked stop line, or if none, at the point nearest the intersecting roadway where the driver has a view of approaching traffic on the intersection roadway before entering the intersection in obedience of a steady red traffic control signal, may make a right turn (unless such turn is otherwise prohibited by posted sign or other traffic control device), but shall yield right-of-way to pedestrians and other traffic proceeding as directed by the traffic control signal at the intersection.

Q. Are Red Light Cameras effective?

A. Yes. Red light cameras have been proven to be effective in reducing red light violations and right-angle crashes. Cities using these systems consistently report safer roads with fewer intersections collisions.

Why did I receive this Notice of Violation?

Based upon images captured by the automated system, your vehicle was determined to have committed a red light violation. As the owner of the vehicle, the Notice of Violation is mailed to you. For every violation captured by the cameras, the images and video are reviewed and approved by an authorized Miami Gardens police officer before a Notice of Violation is issued and mailed to the vehicle’s registered owner.

In L.A., 80% of photo tickets are for right-turn violations. This is not about traffic safety, it is about revenue generation.

I'm not sure about that, but I do think it was unfair because my eyes work just fine and I saw that there was no traffic around, Anywhere and didn't think I was putting anyone in danger. But the law is clear... stop at red light before making right turn... so after having to pay that huge fine that's what I do now... when before I probably didn't every time.. so they have a point, it does work in changing the behaviour of drivers, is $125 a bit of a stiff fine for what I did? hell yes !

 @ myself. I am totally biased in favour of learning to drive a manual transmission as a means to becoming a better driver. I can't prove that it makes you a better driver, I just believe it's true ;)

That is completely false.
