How much notice is required to give the US embassy if you need to reschedule your interview? I asked my employer for the time off today and he straight up told me because it's "so soon" I am unlikely to get it (grr ... that's a whole other rant!). He said he'll send my request to his supervisor so she can evaluate it but ultimately there's a 50% chance I won't get the time off. He also mentioned that because of Christmas holidays and everyone having time off, it's likely I won't find out whether I am approved or denied until mid-January. So ... my question is, is there a specific time I need to reschedule with the embassy by? I know with my medical I must give them 72 hours notice ... but I couldn't find anything about the embassy itself.

Just trying to be prepared -- stupid work :(

Edited to add: My interview will be at the Vancouver consulate.

Rescheduling your K-1 interview could lead to several more months of waiting. From what I have heard of others who have rescheduled you seem to get put to the back of the line again. I suggest you do whatever you can to make the interview. Remind your employer that this isn't 'a holiday off' request - this is an interview with a foreign government that will change your life forever, and really, due to its importance in your life should even take priority. Would he tell you to reschedule important surgery at a hospital because 'so many others are taking time off around then so you can't'? This is on the same level of priority.

I'd go anyway, but that's just me. Your boss is being a jerk for no reason.

I really want to but I have no idea what the repercussions would be if I go without permission, you know? I don't want to get fired :(

Also, at my work you can't be given "priority" on time off even if it's for an important reason. If someone else put in their request before you, they get it. And if the service level doesn't allow it, then you're just SOL.

Now that I think about it I regret asking at all, I should have just been sick for those days :(

Ali - you're planning on leaving anyway. If they fire you over it - meh, oh well, more time for you to get ready to move.

She wouldn't be able to claim EI though.

Yeah I agree with the rest here, I would take the time off regardless, tell them you don't 'want' it - you 'need' it. If they don't make allowances for need over want, that's pretty archaic!

I totally agree with the others here. Go anyhow. This is one of the most important meetings of your entire life...and you are going to be leaving your company soon afterward anyhow! There's NO reason that I can think of why you shouldn't go to your interview. If it came up in a future job interview -- which I highly doubt -- you've got the best excuse / reason possible.

Give me the name and number of your boss. I'll get my people to "talk" some sense into him. ;)

Just like trailmix said ... if I get fired I won't be able to claim EI, and I definitely do not want to mess that up.

I think I will try and calm down about this for now ... hopefully it will work out in my favour and if not then I will simply call in sick for those days :) I am certain I can get a note if need be (I feel bad doing that but if that's what it comes down to then that's what it comes down to) and I am pretty sure they can't do anything about that. I tried to do the right thing by asking for the time off but if they're going to be jerks about it ...

At least I know the consequence of rescheduling, and now I know to avoid that at all costs! Thanks for the input, everyone! :)

Fair enough, regarding the EI thing. But still -- the bigger picture is that you want to get down to the US as soon as possible, so that you can start working as soon as possible etc. etc. Your company just has to be clear how essential this trip is. Take it as a leave of absence if need be.

Sorry to get all riled up...I just don't want to see you guys get shafted because of some small-minded company doofus.

If u re-schedule--you could be in the exact same predicament a few months down the road!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I agree with Wyatt. It's been a long time since I lived there, but if I remember, EI in Ontario makes allowances for "just cause" when leaving or getting fired. They need to realize this is the Government you are dealing with. It's not like changing a home furnace repair appointment.

They need to know that this is a their direction...not your choice. I would contact EI and inquire. Explain that this is an appointment you can't change. They are government and "should"understand the situation.

If you don't get it, call in sick. I believe "sickness" is not just physical. Your calling in sick because you are emotionally stressed that you would miss your important immigration interview.

P.S. I am one of those that had to rescheduled my interview (I was due to have our first born around the time of my scheduled interview). It took over 7 months to get reschedule and that was only after a letter to our state congressman. Mine was a Cr1 interview in Montreal though - so hopefully things have changed since then or Vancouver may be better.

You're giving them over a months notice for an important interview, I dont think thats unreasonable. Especially if its not reschedulable (which it is but could add awhile to your wait, and they dont need to know that). I agree with the others, call in sick or go anyway. When you're giving them over a month to know you need a day off for something really important its kind of selfish of them to be reacting this way to you.
