Hey folks,

I apologize for not being able to help around here at VJ for so long. Family life has really kept me busy since getting here. I have no plans to petition any foreign relative in the near future. But I wanted to learn about it. I read the guide in the USCIS web site and here on VJ too. My question is: Does the petition for a parent, sibling or child also go through the NVC after USCIS? Because when I read the guides, it sounded like you file the I-130 petition and then they send it straight ot the US consulate for an interview. Don't they also have to file a DS-230 (and we, the Affidavit of Support)? Is the paperwork the same or different?

Thanks!

The I-130 for parents has seperate NVC Process, just like petitioning for a spouse.

Is EXACTLY the same steps for NVC.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

I have another question about this. Do they require evidence of relationship just as with spouse and fiance/e petitions? Like do they want you to demonstrate emotional ties with the relative at the interview?

Do you have to show proof of financial support even if the relative - say a brother or father - is self-supportive?

Of course you have to supply them with evidence of a family relationship. For most siblings, it a simple matter of providing their birth certificates to show a common parent. Emotional ties are not a requirement for getting a visa.

You do not have to provide any financial support to any foreign relative. At the point when they immigrate to the US, you will have to provide an Affidavit of Support (AOS). In the AOS, you guarantee to provide the immigrants you petition for a minimum level of financial support if they cannot earn it. Furthermore, you guarantee that if they get welfare while they are green card holders, you will reimburse the government for those benefits. US taxpayers should not be on the hook for people who want to bring their relatives to the US. We should not have to support foreign nationals who want to immigrate to the US.
