Amen to the peeler, my wife refuses to even consider it. She also figures that this country does not want people walking around. We travel a lot for my work and set up in extended stay hotels for 5-6 months at a time. While I am at work she tries to go out and walk and there seem to be limited sidewalks.

No longer in the hands of the USCIS, for my wife at least, next up MIL.

My wife found amazing (surprising) that there are so many poor people in the USA...

My wife wasn't surprised by the amount of poor people, but she and all her buddies were amazed by the amount of "choorni na plantatsi" we have here. They've gone on and on, at length, about the difference between the locals and the originals that they've met through work or ESL class, etc. "It's like they event not real humans. How they can live like this?"

Slim has it great living in Ohio!

I'm as fat and lazy as I wanna be.

I remember living in Illinois for a while and one of the guys I was working with had recently accompanied me back to Ohio for a Reds game or something. When we got back to work, all he kept talking about was how much money we could make if we'd open up a drive-thru right outside the base's main gate. Whenver I leave Ohio I have to remember to wear pants and shoes when I want more beer. It kind of sucks.

houses made of wood.

i'll never forget the night Li arrived. she jumped up and down on them for a half an hour in each room to make sure they wouldn't fall thru. i laughed the whole time.

My wife is not very impressed with our old house, it has no radiators or balcony. And we have to pay for hot water, gas, etc. "Why we must pay to make warm this old house? Why landlord not make more insulation and make warm for us? We event not have carpet on floor. So f'king cold, blat."

I can't wait til we buy a "real house" someday and she gets sticker shock at our first winter heating bill. "I miss zis old apartment in shitty old house, blat."

T.J. Maxx (she has just corrected me on the "double X"), Victoria's Secret (althought I do NOT complain about this one)..

My wife loves those stores. But just be careful. T.J. Maxx is like the marijuana of the fashion world. It starts off as a $100 shopping spree for 10 items and ends up being a $10,000 shopping spree for 10 items at Bebe, Macy's, Saks, etc. Nip it in the bud while you still have the chance!

Also, if you guys haven't done so, get on Victoria's Secret's mailing list. She'll get a free pair of panties every month and $10 off a bra. Plus, you'll get a new catalog for your reading room every week, sometimes even two per week! It's a win-win!

I'll tell you what is really nice is looking through the entire catalog - together - and not even once hearing negative comments about the women in it and how you're such a bad guy for looking through there. "You're only looking at it because you like them more than me. Well, those women aren't even real. They're way too skinny anyway. Plus, they're like, so shallow and stuck up. Plus they're all anorexic and they all take cocain and have mental problems. B!tches. You're lucky to have a girl like me who's more real." Yeah. Sure. Thanks, but no thanks. I'll stick to the "Ah... it will be so nice when I wear only these panties and sexy boots....."

Slim...you should take your wife and visit West Philly lol. It'd be a reaaaaaaal experience (South Philly too, for that matter).

So far, even though my girl isn't here, she is amazed at the internet speeds. We download some stuff from the same place at the same time sometimes, and 2 minutes later I go - it's DONE and she goes: F U american scum! (yes, yes, I TAUGHT her that! hehehehehe). But in all seriousness - can't wait until she is here and I can show her how our United States of A work hehe

We just had a bunch of kids beat up a cop at a basketball game while their parents cheered.

I think we're good.

Yes, everyone should be able to have lightning-fast free porn. And that's why we're now spending 8 Billion dollars to expand high-speed access to rural areas. Only in America!

Probably a bit high-flown for some, probably too romantic for others: there is also one certain wonder that many people who come to the US notice - the US people.

Their smiles, their attitude to life and they way they solve problems ('we just gotta do it'), freedom of the soul. I like the spirit :)

+ And yes, everything is cheap in the US (even in NY) comparing to Moscow (i think rest of Russia would say the same) :)

Alla was prepared for this and it has been also borne out as true.

Also, she stated this weekend, that she just loves the fact that it seems like everything has a Zip-Loc closure. Of course she knew about these but only higher end stuff would incorporate this. Here even the dog treats have a ZipLoc; very nice to keep things fresh.

I do not know you, but I always buy my phone in Russia (or somewhere in Europe), bring it to the USA and then use it on any provider I like. I never put up with the shitty phones they offer in the USA.

The funniest part of doing so is when I calll the provider for a piece of information to configure the phone. It goes something like this:

I: Would you please tell me the IP address of your wireless Internet providers

CSR: What is the model of your phone

I: What do you need that for? I am only asking for information regarding YOUR servers

CSR: But I need the model of your phone to tell you how to configure it

I: If I tell you the model of my phone you are not going to find it on your computer. Just give me the information I want and I will configure it myself

CSR: Without the model of your phone I cannot help you

I: Ok! It is a Samsung D-880

CSR: I am sorry, but we do not support that phone

Are CSR people in ... (every country) ... really that stupid?

What I end up doing is going to their website to find a phone from the same vendor that they do support and I give them that model number. At this point, they give me the information I asked for and I can configure everything myself.

Seriously! CSRs are also a "Wonder of the New World."

The problem with bringing a phone back is that you still don't get a cheaper plan. That is, you can take the discounted phone or leave it, but your plan costs the same.

But if you already have a plan, you do not need a NEW two-year commitment to change your phone.

I have not changed my plan for more than 10 years, but I have had four phones already. I could change companies any time I want if necessary, without paying penalties.

Hehe, this thread cracks me up. I'm starting to wonder if there's some kind of "Russian Bride Time Machine" and you guys are pulling your wives in from 1930's Russia. There are some things my wife's a little surprised about, but it's usually cultural, like when the wait staff show back up every 2 minutes to make sure everything is *still* ok. But she's seen can openers, both the manual and electric variety, has routinely used zip loc bags and even tupperware style containers, and she doesn't shake and point her finger at the tiny spirits in the talking box every time I turn on the TV. ;) Are you sure your wife is R/U/B, or is Elena's Models foisting Amish women off as Russian.

Well, I've never owned an electric can-opener, but honestly, I don't get the demand. It takes me an average of 2 seconds to open a can with a normal can-opener. I actually kind of enjoy the feeling of crunching metal.

Russian cell-phone plans are better, in my opinion. Russia has unlimited plans and they are cheaper because you don't have to pay for the crappy phones.

Actually Alla can not believe our cell phone plan. "You mean Mobile to Mobile is No Limit on minutes?" "Even if in a different city?" Yes dear, Welcome to America. I don't know what others mean by Russian cell phone plans are better than here?

And if you think you MUST stick to your 2 year agreement, you have another thing coming. Yes you must stick to the same provider, but I've always changed plans on the fly before the 2 years ran out. Never a problem.

You don't live in an urban area, do you?

My wife still doesn't use them. We have zip-loc bags all over the place and they're either wide open or just folded over. The whole concept, although not new or foreign for her, just seems to not exist at all.
