We applied for a social security card for my fiance at the end of November. We went in twice, the first time he wasn't in the system and they told us to come back after 10 days, he still wasn't in the system then, but the guy said he would enter the info and go ahead and send it in the following week when he was in the system. So, we just got back from our honeymoon (yay!) and it has now been over 2 weeks since he probably sent it in, and no card yet. I tried calling the national SS# and the lady told me that she couldn't tell me the status of the app, that because he is not a citizen it goes through homeland security and can take 6 weeks, and that I had to call USCIS to check on it. I know that won't help, so was wondering if anyone knows if that is true??????? That K1 social apps take 6+ weeks now?????? Am guessing we have to go into the office to check on the application, doesn't seem to be a way to call the local office. Any thoughts/advice?

Ouch - you should of just walked away when he told you she wasn't in the system.

Now you going through all the SS/DHS redtape machine.

Go to the local office and check is what I would do now.

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

I took Claudeth to the social security office after she was here for two weeks and she got her card in another week so it is kind of weird this is taking so long. What took 6 weeks was to get her name changed on the card. We needed documentation from DHS so when her work permit came she was able to submit the request. 6 weeks later she got the new card.

We were worried about him not being in the system also and were planning on leaving and coming back (for a 3rd time), but the guy assured us that he wasn't going to submit the application until my fiance was in the system. And we were about to leave for a 2 week wedding/honemoon so that sounded great. Instead of submitting it without him being in the system, he said he was going to "put it on hold" and submit it when he was in the system the following week. I am worried that they did send it in anyway. That wouldn't be good.

We are planning on going back in tomorrow to ask. After thinking about it, I am thinking the lady I talked to didn't even check our file when they called us back. She was very vague and just asked if he was a citizen or not then told me that those applications go through homeland security and wouldn't tell me if they had even sent in the application. But the timing makes me worry that the sent it in before he was in the system. Uggghhhhhh.

Ok, so it looks like instead he just didn't submit the held application as he had said. We went in today to the office, and he said the woman on the phone probably didn't look up anything and just gave us basic (and apparently false) info. Same guy - he looked everything up and then was able to give us our receipt and told us we should expect the card in a week, and could come in tomorrow to get the number if we want. My guess is he hadn't actually sent in the application as he said he would once Ray was in the system, and it was still on hold. We were too relieved that it wasn't the other problem - sent in before he was in the system - to bother complaining about it.

Go Back. Get a supervisor. apply for the number in your fiancees name exactly as in her passport. Get from them the number where you can call to get your SSN the next business day. Do not leave until you find someone that knows what they are doing. My wife submitted her application 16 hours after arrivng and had her number the next business day, her card in 6 days. If you do not get exactly the same treatment, you are allowing ignorant, paid by the pound, SS clerks to mess with your life. Good luck with that.

We waited 1 month before my fiancee (K1) tried to get hers, and they told us she wasn't in the system either. They took all her info and said it would be 4 weeks or less to get the number, then another 2 weeks to get the actual card issued.

Well after about 7 weeks we finally got something from them...it was the actual card. So it seems they don't really run like clockwork. Be patient to a point, then maybe contact them again. Goodluck!

He didn't send anything in. The reason I know he didn't is because SSN numbers are generated (created) overnight from the date applied for. For example, if you apply for one on Monday between 9am-5pm, they will generate your number overnight and it will be available on Tuesday. The card won't come for a week or so, but the number will already be created. That's why he told you to come the next day, because he sent it the day you last came in. Typical lazy civil service employee, they just don't care.
