Advance Parole in practice

Hey guys,

First time post to the site, long time observer. Quick question: my wife (AOS applicant) received her advance parole forms a few weeks ago -- two copies arrived in the mail. She's heading back home this weekend for Christmas. Does anyone know how these work in practice? Does she need both copies at the airport, or should she only take one, or what? Do they tear out her I-94 as usual?

Anyone with experience using AP would be quite helpful.

If I remember correctly, my husband used his AP document last spring before our actual interview for his GC. He just presented the AP document to the officers at POE coming back into the States and they stamped one and kept it. Now I cannot remember but I believe he was given the other one back.

She'll travel with both copies. Upon re-entering the US, the CBP officer will keep one, stamp and return the other to your wife.

(Nothing is done with the AP documents upon exiting the US.)

Also, it will be very helpful (and perhaps crucial) for her to have a copy of your marriage certificate with her when she seeks to re-enter the U.S. by virtue of the Advance Parole forms.

Sometimes, they want to check! It's up to each port regarding how particular they want to be. The CBP agent asked for ours during our only use of the AP forms. I believe that the new immigrant should, at all times, carry every piece of the most updated paperwork that there is. This may seem like overkill to some, but it's natural prudence to me.
