Grad school is for losers. Kidding. I love it. But not everyone has what it takes - and I do not mean brilliance (those are even more rare); but the long haul and late nights that make for a real good researcher; PLUS the commitment to develop GOOD undergraduate teaching techniques; and the ability to communicate complex topics to ANY audience. Graduate school and its job market has become more complex as society demands more accountability from us.

#######, did I just write all that??????

I agree with all that...plus...you have to be very determined not to get a real job after graduating with your under-grad

In all honesty, when I lived overseas I noticed that ALL of the Asians I worked with at my same professional level had Graduate degrees. Unless the USA starts to really realize the immense value of education, and especially higher education and continued education, we are really going to be in trouble and our kiddos are going to have a difficult time competing in the global environment. I'm constantly telling this to my son who is now a freshman at the university.

Yes and it was brilliant!

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Our Hermana*Len* is quite the sharp sword! Bishop bows to Hermana Len...in a gesture of respect (and fear!)

Morning commies. I have 2 little kids again today. I looked in the closet this morning and then shut it very quickly.

I'm still contemplating if we should do the 3-D sonogram, it's like $250 (ouch!) and my insurance doesn't cover it. I just don't know if it's even worth it or not, I mean I kinda would like to be surprised to see what she looks like when she's born, but the 3-D is kinda cool.

Oh guys, what kind of coffee do you brew at home? My big bag of Dunkin Donuts coffee is about to come to an end and instead of buying another one (they're kind of expensive) I figured I'd try something else. My grandma uses Folgers and that's good but maybe something else? Recommendations please!

I think it's worth it but I'm not the one paying for it

I drink Peet's but I buy the whole bean not ground

In all honesty, a lot of people are applying to grad school because they cannot find a job. But we are not a repository of failed workers. That's when my evil ways come in at this point of the game. this is what I am right now checking for: say Nagi graduated 13 years ago and is now applying for her PhD in Sexual History of Japan.

1. What was her BA in? grades? location? time to completion?

2. Did she do any type of research while an undergrad? (if not, she is likely fvcked)

3. Has she actively written #######, visited, read, etc.- Can she write like an academic? (see statement of purpose)

4. Has her work in those 13 years since graduation been related to Sexual History at all?

5. WHO are her academic references? What do they say? Did she actually worked for them or was she just another student? Is the letter proforma or actually thought through?

6. Blah blah blah.

Yeah, it is elitist and stringy - so is academic life. For those who don't like it, there's always technical colleges that would love to take their tuition money. Or there's Bill Graham's/Jerry Falwell's "universities"
