Because it stimulates the economy. The problem here is that anyone asks WHY someone "needs" something in a private residence. No one's damn business, that's why!

I agree with everyone else on disabilities. Maybe it was also thrown in to make moving furniture easier? The downstairs isn't difficult, but moving large pieces of furniture up the staircase can be a real hassle. Even if you're careful, you could damage the item and/or the staircase.

Most large townhomes here are three floors with an elevator as an option. A lot of times in place of a "half bath". Would deffinatly make it nice for moving furniture, though you wouldn't be able to get anything big and bulky into one as they are typically small. If someone has problems getting around it sure makes it nice, so they are an option and are in a number of townhomes here.

BTW. Does anyone notice the angle of that foto? It must have been taken on the edge of the lens.

Google Earth maps all look like that now too. It's very common.

Bing uses aerial photographs in addition to satellite photography. They can get higher detail images of the ground, but the images are skewed at quite an angle.

At 6 Kips Ridge in Verona, a 22-year-old town house with four bedrooms, four and a half baths, an elevator and a four-car garage, listed at $997,500, there were a number of wide-eyed lookers. The lavishly finished end unit caused a “sensation” among them, according to its agent, Kathryn Lemmer of Coldwell Banker. But it had no immediate takers.

Neither, apparently, did any other property on the tour.

But Ms. Baldwin said her primary goal had been achieved. “The real point was to get people to feeling comfortable about looking at condos again,” was how she put it.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."
