Generics must be approved by the FDA. I mean, whether the quality exists, I think it's more with the chemistry that says whether or not your body likes generics or not. Some people's body may work better with generics, while, they may not work generics. So, for those who use generics and works, great for them.

There was a news story on generics not to long ago. Generics are not retested. The dosage in generics can also vary greatly.

Each to their own I guess.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

How would the dosage vary when the dosage of active ingredients is measured into the drug?

Dosage, potency etc all varies.

Generics are a last resort for my doctor, both here and abroad. Family and friends (with PhDs) who work for various companies and universities conducting research on this stuff don't use generics and 'advised' me to not do so either. That's enough for me.

Anyone who trusts generics, by all means use them. Same deal of Organic versus the regular mass-produced ####### they sell here.

if wal-mart starts offering $15 Pap smears with no appointment necessary i am so in...

You would want a Walamrt worker to carry that out? :unsure:

While I realize the grade of worker varies depending on region, I would rather perform my own heart surgery than have a underpaid minimum wage worker even think about examining me.

Forget all the promises Obamer has made about "bringing down the Cost of Healthcare".

The fact is right now you can go to Wal-mart and get many prescriptions filled at an even lower rate than your co-pay might be.

Most people know Walmart will fill many proscriptions for $4 and a 90day supply for $10.

I heard of this but never really checked into it until this week.

I typically pay $10 co-payment at my Drug store, when I picked up the list of covered-drugs at wal-mart, I saw mine was on it Which would mean a 6 dollar savings. (even more for bigger refills)

When I mentioned this to my drug store,... that I want to transfer to wal-mart they said "we will match their price".

(Rite aide).

So thanks to wal-mart and the power of the Market, I will be getting my prescription even cheaper than my Insurance Co-pay.

Hey folks if you like your pharm, see if they have a matching policy as well.

Just one more example of how free markets give better service and lower prices most of the time.

Its not generics that are the problem. You can get generics pretty cheaply at whatever pharmacy that you go to. Its everything else that is under 20 year patent protection that's driving up the cost of drugs. How is walmart going to fix that?

Exactly. There isn't a store w/ pharmacy around here that doesn't offer low price - and even free to you - prescription drugs. Publix example below.

Good news.

Select oral antibiotics are free.

At Publix, we’re always looking for ways to make your life easier. And helping you manage healthcare costs is no exception. That’s why we’re pleased to tell you that some commonly prescribed generic oral antibiotics are free at your neighborhood Publix Pharmacy. To take advantage of this great deal, all you have to do is bring in your prescription for any of the medications below, and we’ll give you up to a 14-day supply at no cost to you—regardless of your prescription insurance provider or the number of prescriptions you need filled.

* Amoxicillin

* Ampicillin

* Cephalexin (capsules and suspension only)

* Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim (SMZ-TMP)

* Ciprofloxacin (excluding Ciprofloxacin XR)

* Penicillin VK

* Doxycycline Hyclate (capsules only)

* Erythromycin Stearate and Ethylsuccinate

It's rather laughable you Obamites are so in the can that you are dismissing this 4 dollar prescription as "nothing".

You even post this florida chain store as evidence.

The only thing is, your "comparison has 8 drugs listed, Wal-mart has 18 categories!

Look, I am no big fan of walmart, either but some of you people need to change with the changing demographics of business, you really look silly scoffing at Walmart Shoppers while shopping at some other chains which vary only by decor.

Now Big Dog, you've seem what Walmart has done to lower healthcare costs for people and you even gave props to Publix ... now tell us what Obama is doing to lower peoples healthcare costs?

Speaking of pap smears, don't think it is not possible for a Walmart of Medicine to come along and give 15 dollar Papsmears and many other routine health services which professionals are charging way to much for now.

In fact, when laws are reformed to allow this... thats when we will see real price reform in the Healthcare field.

Right now it is a complicated cartel of players all getting rich while we bleed.

(I don't mind them getting rich... just not off my blood :)

You have to be smoking crack to think that $4 generic meds produced in 2nd and 3rd countries, from unknown companies, is a good thing.

This race to the bottom is only accelerating the country's decline in quality of life. Economics 201: Countries where the average Joe is prosperous, do not promote generics or other bargain basement (el cheapo) products. Only 2nd and in particular 3rd world countries do. AKA price sensitive consumer.

Now Danno, care to take a look at the other side of Wal Mart's low cost coin?

Ohio:

COLUMBUS — Attention shoppers: Ohio taxpayers are picking up the tab for the more than 15,000 Walmart associates who qualify for Medicaid.

...

In June 2009, the state spent about $28.5 million on Medicaid, $14 million on food stamps, and $10.9 million on welfare for employees of the 50 largest employers.

Alabama:

Wal-Mart No. 1 in employee Medicaid

State provides health insurance for workers of major companies

Washington:

The state of Washington joins a growing list reporting that Wal-Mart leads in healthcare subsidies. The study by the state Senate revealed that $12 million of tax payer money is being used to subsidize Wal-Mart, who has 3,180 employees receiving Medicaid benefits and 456 employees on the state's Basic Health Plan.

...just to name a few.

Publix, on the other hand, continues to make the 100 Best Companies to Work For list. So, let's give props where props are due. ;)

As for the Obama administration: Obama is set to succeed where administration after administration has failed for the last several decades in beginning to tackle our broken health care system. Is he going to get all he wanted? No. We all know that all that's being addressed at this point is the health insurance aspect of the system. Is that going to be enough to put the system on sound footing for decades to come? I don't think so. Big Pharma needs to be tackled to bring prescription drug prices into the same range where they are in comparable countries. Fee-For-Service ought to be replaced by a results oriented remuneration scheme. And yes, Medical Malpractice Reform is needed in a way that protects patients and doctors. There are other areas, of course, but I think these three would make an impact on the cost of care. That said, what we have here is a much needed course correction that will finally put us on a path to near universal coverage.

Common sense would say that there are many many other companies that have employee subsidies as well. Just because Walmart is on top and successful is your main beef.

What plan does Obama have? As far as I can tell, he has absolutely no health care plan. All aspects of the bill(s) in congress did not originate with him, they originated in congress. So, its laughable when he talks about "my plan".

But he's planning for the future. When it becomes a failure in one way or another, he can blame the congress.
