Hi!

So our paperwork is coming together. We've ordered our official marriage certificate.

I was just wondering if the marriage certificate is sufficient or if we require a copy of the license too...

the certificate of marriage is what is needed... the "license" isn't worth the paper it is written on for immigration purposes...

Extra copies of the marriage certificate are really cheap... so as a previous poster says... get more than one copy just in case.

I think the only time you would use the marriage license is to get married. Its like a DL, you have to be licensed to drive a car legally. If you wanna get married legally, you need to be licensed too.

never have I been ever asked to give up my certified copy... In all things we have provided a regular photocopy... this includes banks, USCIS, DMV, etc...

hey payxibika, all we did was make a copy (photocopy) of our original marriage certificate. we didnt spend extra money on getting extra marriage certificates. that was all we needed, and then just showed the IO our original at the interview :)

01/09/04 -- Finally met him in person when he visited me in London, UK.

June & Dec 04 -- Visited him in Los Angeles, CA.

07/10/05 -- Arrived in the U.S. on F-1 Visa.

07/18/05 -- Got married in Las Vegas, NV.

01/08/09 -- Visited London, UK with him.

06/12/09 -- My graduation, F-1 Visa expires in 60 days.

07/30/09 -- Sent off I-485 and I-130 TODAY!

08/02/09 -- Delivered to Chicago Lockbox @ 9.35pm.

08/05/09 -- Checks cashed.

08/08/09 -- Recieved 4 NOA-1's (I-130, I-485, I-131 and I-765).

The certificates just arrived in today's mail :dance:

We ordered 2, but we can always order more online if we need to. It only took 4 days to get these ones!

So I just made color copies of the cert front and back for the AOS paperwork...

We have a few forms to finish and are waiting for a few letters from family and friends but hopefully we'll get to file next week :thumbs:

So it's just the I-130 that needs a certified copy of the marriage cert correct?

For the other forms i'm thinking of throwing in photocopies of the marriage cert as it explains my name change.

If you read the instructions to the forms it says unless specifically requested the USCIS does NOT routinely ask for originals and regular photocopies of original or certified copies is sufficient...

You're right I just re-read the instructions and it just appears to say copies...

Well since we have a spare certified copy of the marriage cert maybe i'll put that in for the i-130... Then just throw in photo copies for the other forms...

Hopefully this will be ok...

What did everyone else do? Photo copy or certified copy...
