Lord Nicholas Stern, the British economist who produced an influential report on the potential costs of global warming, is strongly urging the British public to go vegetarian in order to slow the accumulation of heat-trapping gases in our atmosphere. Said Stern: “Meat is a wasteful use of water and creates a lot of greenhouse gases. It puts enormous pressure on the world’s resources. A vegetarian diet is better” [The Times]. Stern also suggested that climate change legislation that makes it more expensive to generate greenhouse gases could soon force meat producers to raise prices, which might lower consumption. In a 2006 report, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) concluded that worldwide livestock farming generates 18% of the planet’s greenhouse gas emissions. By comparison, it said, all the world’s cars, trains, planes and boats accounted for a combined 13% of greenhouse gas emissions [BBC News]. The gases are produced by each step of livestock production. Take cows, for example. First forested land is cleared for cattle grazing or for agricultural operations that generate livestock feed, then there’s the methane emitted by burping cows and the nitrous oxide in their manure, and finally there are the energy costs associated with slaughtering the cows and transporting the meat.

Not everyone is calling for the drastic measure of eliminating meat entirely from our diets. Many experts agree that we could make a good start merely by dropping meat one day a week. This is what the citizens of the Belgian city of Ghent have been doing, voluntarily, all this year, without noticeable ill effects [The Times].

I wouldn't turn vegetarian to slow global warming...but I'd do my part by trying to rid the world of cows, one Ribeye steak at a time...

$12 pound for hamburger, but there's nothing like is so far. Sometime I am going to have a NY sirloin strip ground and give that a try. The ribeye burger is so soft that it doesn't feel like a hamburger in your mouth. The taste is fantastic. I have a local meat market that will do whatever you want.

"Methane is a chemical compound with the chemical formula CH4. It is the simplest alkane, and the principal component of natural gas. Methane's bond angles are 109.5 degrees. Burning methane in the presence of oxygen produces carbon dioxide and water. The relative abundance of methane and its clean burning process makes it an attractive fuel. However, because it is a gas at normal temperature and pressure, methane is difficult to transport from its source. In its natural gas form, it is generally transported in bulk by pipeline or LNG carriers; few countries transport it by truck. Methane was discovered and isolated by Alessandro Volta between 1776 and 1778 when studying marsh gas from Lake Maggiore.

Methane is a relatively potent greenhouse gas with a high global warming potential of 72 (averaged over 20 years) or 25 (averaged over 100 years).[1] Methane in the atmosphere is eventually oxidized, producing carbon dioxide and water. As a result, methane in the atmosphere has a half life of seven years.

The abundance of methane in the Earth's atmosphere in 1998 was 1745 parts per billion, up from 700 ppb in 1750. Methane can trap about 20 times the heat of CO2. In the same time period, CO2 increased from 278 to 365 parts per million. The radiative forcing effect due to this increase in methane abundance is about one-third of that of the CO2 increase.[2] In addition, there is a large, but unknown, amount of methane in methane clathrates in the ocean floors. The Earth's crust contains huge amounts of methane. Large amounts of methane are produced anaerobically by methanogenesis. Other sources include mud volcanoes, which are connected with deep geological faults, and livestock (primarily cows) from enteric fermentation."

Other interesting things I have read about methane, we have a known 12,000 year supply that could satisfy all of our energy needs and do not have to depend on foreign imports of a much dirtier fuel, crude oil to burn. Methane by some scientists is the leading cause of global warming and holes in the ozone layer. One scientist believes the earth can emit a bubble of it large enough to cause a complete earth flash fire, that essentially gives the earth a rebirth killing off everything known on this planet. Very similar to how a forest fire is needed to pop open pine cones to start a new growth of trees.

Vegetables are more difficult to digest, we would be contributing to the production of methane as well, Chinese use their decaying manure to gather methane for a cooking fuel. Some believe methane bubbles from the Bermuda Triangle can capsize a ship.

Thing is, the media is totally ignoring both this source of fuel and it's effects on global warming, but prefer to concentrate on a byproduct of it, CO2, and make an issue out of that. But our leaders, like Al Gore, and even Obama that sucks up to him lead us in a different direction. Should learn a hell of a lot more before opening their mouths.
