I just saw last night's W5 repeat on CFTO. One story that caught my attention was a feature on immigration fraud in Canada, specifically Canadian spouses who are duped into marrying people in foreign countries for the sole pupose of immigrating to Canada. I found it interesting. Unfortunately there were no hints on how I can be taken advantage of by a Brazilian supermodel in such a manner. There was another story on getting Canadian immigration via the sham marriage route. What do you think of the issue? These things happen in the US but not nearly as much. The link is here BTW: Immigration fraud

Hi Everyone,

IR5FORMUMSIE-Thanks for posting that article here in VJ. Btw..How do you get CFTO tv in the USA? Or then again, maybe, you're in Canada instead?..lol...(darn..now I miss Canadian tv...along with bagged milk and smarties..lol...)

Intereting to know too, that there is immigration fraud all over the world, regardless of country...Not too surprising though, that Canadian immigration is this way, as overall they are pretty relaxed in their immigation policies, in comparison to countries such as the USA. Lol..maybe Canada can learn a thing or two about cracking down on fraud from the USA. Though on the other hand, the USA is not exactly perfect in their immigration policies either, and there are couples who get away with fraud marriages here in the USA as well, (though somewhat harder to do). For example, there are loopholes with the I-751...But then again, that's better than nothing at all..At least for that it takes more effort, time, and money, to show that the marriage is real here in the USA...

It's unfortunate, that when people are duped into these marriages, that it is difficult for them to resolve such an issue, and have to go through many legal channels to have the immigrant deported. In ways, one has to think: Couldn't they see that the relationship was a fraud in the first place, before they married? Wasn't there some obvious signs that they missed? I guess in ways, love is blind, and along the way they missed the warning signs...Both are to blame here: 1) The immigrant spouse, for commiting the immigration fraud in the first place 2) The sponsor for being so naive about their immigrant spouse being a fraud.

Still, with the sponsor taking action now, is better than not taking action at all. In this case, I do hope that the sponsor does get a favourable outcome in this case and gets their immigrant spouse deported. Frauds don't deserve to be in the country!

And because of marriage fraud, the real, genuine, and legitimate couples are put under more scrutiny from the system...Doesn't seem right in that way..One bad apple spoils the bunch.....No wonder legitimate immigrants are unfairly looked upon....Unfair, indeed!

Ok, those are my thoughts...What are yours?.....

It's an interesting broadcast.

While I don't think immigration laws as such will be changing anytime soon and I also don't think that U.S. immigration is much better at weeding out fraudulent marriages (who knows, we don't have stats to compare) - I do think that it is unfair to the Canadian tax payers that there is so much time spent on having people, who are found out, deported.

While I do not think it is immigration's job to protect people who sponsor immigrants who are later revealed to have defrauded them (that is individual responsibility imo), I would like to see the deportation of those 'immigrants' be swifter.

I'm in Toronto but I know of quite a few Canadians in So. Cal, AZ, VA and FL who watch CFTO via satellite. Can't help you about the bagged milk though. Smarties are around but expensive.

Some people enter into relationships with blinders on, even when immigration is not an issue. Immigration fraud is not new, I knew of one person who was selling marriage to his daughter for $15,000 a few years ago. I guess prices have gone up. The dancer in the story could have hired a PI to check out the drummer before anything happened. The government could do a little checking on these cases. It would take longer and add a few bucks to the cost but it would catch much of the fraud. In the story it further mentioned that 25% of all such relationships are fraudulent. That would seem to me to be a sufficiently high level to warrant changes. My father used to go crazy about this, especially at tax time. Why should we pay for these criminals? It cheapens the institution of marriage, is a burden to society and lessens the image of Canada in the eyes of the world. Remember the Simpsons when the immigrants couldn't land at Ellis Island and the captain said they were going to try Canada. That's not a joke. USCIS is not perfect but it is much better. I guess you either need a movie starring Gerard Depardieu and Andie MacDowell or maybe one starring Ryan Ryenolds and Sandra Bullock to get anything done.

Hi IR5FORMUMSIE and Everyone,

Ok, now you got me really confused..You're in Canada..but are applying for immigration for your parents to the USA from there? How is this possible? Through the US embassy in Canada, maybe? Lol...Sorry, I don't know much about the IR5 process...But glad to hear that you are in Canada and are enjoying your time there anyways. And good luck with your petition for your parents too. Likewise, we get Canadian stations (CTV and CBC) here in New York State where I am too, especially towards the Buffalo, NY areas. Unfortunately, I don't live close enough to the border or to Buffalo,NY to get such channels locally on cable. And the satellite tv that I have doesn't have those Canadian channels either. Funny though, in Toronto we get Buffalo tv stations and in Buffalo we get Toronto tv stations. But if you live too far away, you're out of luck there. Oh well. I'll just live with American tv for now. As for the bagged milk and smarties, I'll just stock up on that whenever I go to Canada for a visit. No worries there...Just have to wait awhile for that...

I agree, even if it wasn't for immigration, some people do "enter relationships with blinders on". Lol..thus there goes that old saying, "love is blind"...However, there is more likely than not, more fraud associated with immigration-related cases, especially if money is a factor here for people in poorer countries who are desperate for money and will go through any means, even if it is fraud, to obtain such. Unfortunate, really. I agree too, that immigration fraud is not new. But the ways to fight against it is new, as more immigration fraud cases are in the media and more apparent in society. And yes, more work and improvements can be done there to crack down on such immigration fraud cases all over the world! Interesting to know too, about the high statistics associated wtih this fraud, as the more the government keeps track of stuff like this, the more things can be done to prevent such. It is definitely a burden to society, and we who are legally here shouldn't have to pay for this fraud at all!

Lol..I remember that Simpsons episode too, and the other tv shows and movies, such as The Proposal, that highlights immigration in its storyline. I'm not sure if this helps or hinders on the fraud cases, but it does call into mind that immigration is no easy task. Lol..If anything, media like that makes us laugh about all of this and say, "hey, this isn't how immigration really works!" (oh if they only knew about what we here on vj have to go through...)

Hmm....maybe we should make our own tv show or movie here on vj...that shows how the immigration process really works...

Now that would be an interesting "eye opener" for everyone else to see...

My brother is the USC. My parents are permanent residents of the US but are still moving assets. In the current economy, this is taking longer than expected. I think that movies like The Proposal are good for immigration. USCIS might think that all Canadians, even the men, look like Sandra Bullock.

I like the tv show idea, Law and Order :Visa Journey.

Worse still they're raising their kids to add extra "u"s to words like honour and mispronounce the letter zee as zed. They look like us and sound even more like us than we do. Hi IR5FORMUMSIE,

Ahh...now I see how your immigration journey with your parents is. Thanks for explaining more about that here. Lol..seems kind of confusing, as here on vj I'm kind of used to seeing marriage related immigration cases. But then again, vj is immigration for all to the usa, regardless of how they are getting here. So, congratulations on your parents becoming permanent residents, and good luck with their future journeys in the USA too. On that note, since you parents are here in the USA, are you coming here too?

Yes, focusing on immigration issues through the media is good in ways, making others aware that such issues even exist at all. A lot of people seem to think, "come to the USA, you're a citizen, and that's it"...afraid that this is not the case, as far as "reality" is concerned. Lol..by the way, Sandra Bullock is American and Ryan Reynolds is the Canadian in real life......

Hey, good idea you have ther about "law and order: visa journey".....

Let's sell the rights to that show to CTV...see if they will pick it up and broadcast it there!

Stay tuned to the next episode, where Mr.Canuck attempts to smuggle over bagged milk, only to be interrogated by the USCIS...

Ok, silliness aside, yes, the media needs to make immigration issues more aware in the public, as who knows, maybe this will make others aware of the immigration process and help in cracking down on fraud marriages...

The opening of Law and Order :Visa Journey would go something like this : "In the immigration system, lactose based offenses are considered especially heinous..."

Thank you for those kind words, Mom and Pop are still hard-wired Canucks but they are growing to appreciate Arizona. If they didn't have the asset issue they'd spend all their time there. I have no idea if I'll go to the US, I probably will, invariably to some place colder than Toronto.

BTW, Sandra Bullock is a notorious Canuck-basher. She had several large anti-Canadian emblems visible in Miss Congeniality. :crying:

Hi IR5FORMUMSIE,

 ....All this talk about milk...Lactose crimes are heinous indeed!

(lol..and with that, my son just let go and spild the milk agin....brb....)

I'm sure your parents will appreciate Arizona when them move dwn there, especialy more so that they have the property down there alredy and if they like warm weather too. Lol..Arizona will sure give them a break from those cold Canucky winters! And yeah, i fyou like warm weather too, I'm usre you'd be visiting them pretty often too now that they are here. And it's probably more convenient for them to travel as permant residents than as visitors, so glda that the IR5 worked out well for them there.

Lol..and if you like Toronto weather...may I suggest that you come down to the Buffalo, NY area to visit on your way to Arizona...Seriously, the weather here about the same as it is in Toronto (80% of the time actually), and at times the weather can be colder too, since ti gets the cold air from Canada, in additon to lake efect snow too. Brr...As Canucks, we are trained to like cold weather..lol...and anything else would be hard to get used to (at least what I think anyways...I cant live without snow!) .

Hmm...Didn't know that Sandra Bulock didnt like Canada...Wonder why she played a Canadian in the proposal movie then? Intersting too, about the miss congenality movie...sublimal mesages about Canada there?....Hmmm.....

Ant

The opening of Law and Order :Visa Journey would go something like this : "In the immigration system, lactose based offenses are considered especially heinous..."

Thank you for those kind words, Mom and Pop are still hard-wired Canucks but they are growing to appreciate Arizona. If they didn't have the asset issue they'd spend all their time there. I have no idea if I'll go to the US, I probably will, invariably to some place colder than Toronto.

BTW, Sandra Bullock is a notorious Canuck-basher. She had several large anti-Canadian emblems visible in Miss Congeniality. :crying:
