Live sheep exports crucial to economy...

An interesting article for you sheep lovers. Hopefully I won't get suspended for posting it becasue it concerns Australia. Maybe it would be ok if I just started one thread for outisde the US headlines and posted things there?

CURTAILING live sheep exports in favour of processing meat locally would damage the economy, Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) says.

A new report commissioned by the World Society for the Protection of Animals found a sheep slaughtered and processed locally was worth 20 per cent more than those shipped out of the country.

It said that for every $100 of output created in Western Australia through live exports, the state's bottom line was bolstered by $81.

But the figure jumped to $101.50 if the animal was processed locally, according to the report's author, consultancy firm ACIL Tasman.

MLA live exports manager Michael Finucan said most of Australia's live sheep exports were bound for the Middle East, which required chilled, frozen and live product.

"Australia is able to supply all of those categories and there's value in all of those categories," he told AAP today.

If Australia curtailed its supply of live sheep exports, business would simply go elsewhere.

"All it would be doing is giving a segment of the market away to another competitor," Mr Finucan said, adding there was no guarantee processed meat exports would increase sufficiently to cover the loss of revenue from decreasing live exports.

If you're going to bait, at least post this:

Australian TV show apologizes for blackface skit

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

I'm not baiting, and I saw the link you just posted. It was actually on the news here earlier tonight. I don't understand how posting Australian news headlines is baiting anymore than posting the bad news that happens in the US. I'd almost think that you believed in double standards if I didn't know better. Fair is fair, or at least I would hope.

Sheep should not be killed for food. That's just wrong.

Sheep are loving creatures who should be treated with tenderness and kindness and kinkiness at all times.

Scandal says: Practice safe sex in the sheep pen at all times

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

I'm a fan of Australian Sheep. Doesn't have to be 'live' for me to cook it, as long as I can cook it, I'm happy.

But.

IMO, the Australian Government is trying to recover from the Live Sheep Export Problems it had in 2003 - see http://www.liveexportshame.com/cormo_history.htm for a very brief history.

This is 2009 - AU agri has taken 6 years to recover? Or just that long to flush out the agri ministers?

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Mine works fine for a few weeks, then I have to re-set it a few time to get it working smoothly again. But I digress, the important issue is the sheep. I may start and organization for the ethical treatment of sheep. PETOS.
