Meleanie Hain, 31, and Scott Hain 33, were pronounced dead shortly after 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at their 1 1/2-story brick home in Lebanon, a small city about 80 miles west of Philadelphia.

The couple's three children — a 10-year-old boy and girls aged 2 and 6 — were home at the time but weren't hurt, police said. They were taken to stay with friends and relatives.

Some neighbors told the Lebanon Daily News they heard or saw the children running from the house and screaming "Daddy shot Mommy!" shortly before the 911 emergency center was alerted at 6:20 p.m.

Details about the shootings and what prompted the violence remained unclear Thursday morning.

Neighbor Mark Long said the Hains had been having marital problems for about a week. He said Scott Hain had left home on Tuesday, and Meleanie Hain didn't know where he was, but that he returned Wednesday.

" Thomas Shaak, who lives a block from the Hains, said the couple hardly socialized with neighbors. The avid gardener said he occasionally saw Scott Hain working on his yard, but the two did not greet each other. He said Hain worked as a security officer and often kept odd hours.

Melanie Hain became an overnight celebrity and, to some, a steward of Second Amendment rights when she carried a Glock strapped to her belt to her daughter's soccer game September 11, 2008.

Days later, on September 20, her permit to carry a gun was revoked by Lebanon County Sheriff Michael DeLeo, who claimed that she showed poor judgment at the child's game. County Judge Robert Eby later reinstated the permit.

Weisberg, Hain's attorney, said the sheriff's action violated Hain's First, Second, Fourth and 14th Amendment rights.

A lawsuit was filed against DeLeo on Hain's behalf for compensatory damages. She sought punitive and statutory damages, Weisberg said, along with reimbursement of attorneys' fees and lost wages.

Although Weisberg called the Hains a "loving" and "unified" couple, he said that about four months ago, Melanie Hain told him that they were separating and that she wanted to remove his name from the $1 million lawsuit.

Although there was no indication of abuse, Weisberg said, Melanie Hain was contemplating getting a "stay-away order."

Divorce accomplishes the same result with typically no prison terms or death sentences attached. Maybe this guy didn't know this, or maybe he is an idiot, feel the latter.

Why do idiots always make the news, even around here because a guy killed a girl that wouldn't date him. Whatever gave him the idea that he would be happy with a girl that hates his guts? They guy is an idiot, seem to run into plenty of those. Anyway, he is off to prison at our expense.

i knew of these people, but did not know them personally. they lived about 45 minutes from where i do, and were members of a pennsylvania firearms forum that i haunt.

from what i am hearing there the man was a corrections officer and the woman was a housewife. they got into a spat and he shot her. when police responded he locked himself into the house and eventually shot himself. they are survived by grade school aged children.

corrections officers have one of the worst jobs on the planet, and are usually guys who can't get a job as a police officer. they are underpaid and work hard hours. corrections officers and LEO of all types have a statistically higher rate of domestic violence than the norm, and higher homicide and suicide rates, too. this particular housewife was a woman who decided one day to buy a gun, and then decided to start wearing it around publicly. she got some "training" from some guys who run "training seminars" so was technically capable of using the firearm. IMHO she was not emotionally capable of wearing a gun on a daily basis.

i watched her online persona develop on PAFOA over the last few years, and watched her go thru the events that brought her to the headlines last year. the PAFOA forum is full of people like her who did not grow up with guns and think that "training" in the operation of firearms is all that they need to be safe. they do not understand at a gut level what the entire concept is about.

most are city people who have never killed a living creature. they are like children with really big toys. i have scolded them from time to time and have called into question their fascination with "open carry". i have asked whether a strong desire to carry a gun openly indicates a flaw in the persona that would be better addressed by other means, such as intensive psychoanalysis. for this i have been suspended from time to time.

there are many other good people on that forum and it is a good source of gun related news, so i keep my opinions toned down a bit these days. open carry has always been legal in pennsylvania, as was affirmed by commonwealth vs ortiz and commonwealth vs hawkins in the 90's. melanie's headlines made it better understood, and prompted an issuance of a training on the topic in the 2009 MPOTEC police training that is administered by the state police.

this training has allowed me to go from concealed carry to "incidental carry". i wear my gun however i want to now, without concern for concealment, though it still is, most of the time. as a 45 year old white man in reasonably good shape with a short haircut and respectable attire i get away with it, no questions asked. once in awhile i even get "cop coffee" at quicky marts. my childhood in the country and use of firearms since the age of 5, and training of another nature during my younger years, has prepared me for the responsibility involved with firearms carry in the civilian world.

guns are not toys for people to play with. melanie hain was not mature enough to carry one. her husband was tired of her abrasive personality, and was not interested in the lawsuit recently lodged. there is no way they would have gotten a million dollars compensation for her trouble. they were just lower middle class white trash going thru relationship difficulties.

this event in no way typifies the experience of the millions of gun owners in pennsylvania. it is not cause for a "psych eval restriction" on the purchase of firearms (wet dream of the ultra liberals). it is not cause for any action other than a double funeral. it is not cause for suspension of the one civil right that guarrantees all others in the face fo an increasingly ayn randish government.
