Hello fellow VJ'ers! So me and my fiancee constantly talk on Skype...but recently Skype has been messing up all the time and driving me crazy because all I want is to talk to my love without the call being dropped or the sound or video messing up. Any suggestions on a better video chat software?

Thanks.

The problem is unlikely to be Skype. I use Skype every day with near perfect results, both for keeping in touch with my husband who is deployed in the Middle East and my family in England and the calls are crisp and clear with almost perfect video.

You might want to check that your video/audio drivers are up to date, that you aren't running a lot of superfluous programs/drivers at the same time, that you aren't running any P2P programs and you don't have a screen full of open browser windows.

If these aren't issues for you, then you can move onto the connection monitoring websites who will tell you your "real" speed; then you can approach your provider with any issues. If you're running through a router as well as a modem, check that you aren't losing a high percentage of data packets. If you are, consider reducing the maximum packet size. If you're a prolific downloader of videos/torrents then you may be suffering from SYN floods which cause your connection to slow and then bomb. Easy fixes out there on the net, just have to do a bit of searching via Bing/Google/MSN/whatever search engine you choose.

Millions of people use Skype without any problems at all. The likelihood of it being a Skype issue when it's occurring continually is pretty minimal. Skype is also one of (if not) THE best VoIPs out there. It's especially useful for proving ongoing relationship with it's tracked history of incoming/outgoing calls and chats.

Good luck getting it sorted. Persevering with getting it working perfectly will be worth the effort, as all the VoIPs will suffer the same issues if it's the connection that's the problem. However, should you choose to trial others, look for Yahoo and MSN Messengers as their functionality is much the same. :)

EDIT: Forgot to say, how much RAM are you running your system with? Obviously, more is better when you 're talking about video and it could be that the technology on Skype is ahead of your system spec. Always worth double checking recommended spec if you're having issues.

Thanks you. I do love Skype just because it keeps all of ours conversations but the quality of the call is normally not good. I do tend to download a bit, I guess I need to clean up my computer a bit. I didn't think that that was what was interfering with the call because it was happening on his end too. Thank you so much.
