Is anyone using a pc with a core i7 or some other leading edge processor? How about graphics card and motherboards? I'm looking for some feedback and ideas for a new pc. It's getting to be desktop replacement time. Please post your configurations.

Pentium Pro

Windows NT 4.0 with service pack 5.

256MB - RAM

Matox Millennium video card

Sound blaster video card

oh ya...it ROCKS!!!

 Does it do what you need it to do? I guess that's all that matters.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Enjoy your turbo charged machines..... I still wonder why the average person needs a server grade PC?............

Maybe they're compensating for something?

 Perhaps.....

It downloads porn quite well. So I guess the answer to your question is YES!

Mine is 3 weeks old. I use it for AVCHD editing and it is still too slow. I still need to do some tweaking.

Intel i7 920 @ 3.83GHz

ZALMAN CNPS9900LED 120mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler (I do not recommend this cpu cooler with the motherboard I got because I had to modify it with a dremel to get it to fit)

12GB RAM Corsair 6 x 2GB

EVGA E758-A1 motherboard

EVGA 896-P3-1170-AR GeForce GTX 275 896MB Video card

Intel X25-M Mainstream SSDSA2MH080G2C1 2.5" 80GB SSD Hard drive

Seagate 1TB Hard drive

Windows 7 64-bit

The last computer I built in 2007 was when I got sick of upgrading my comptuer all the time for video games so I bought an Xbox 360, PS3, and recently I also got a Wii (for the virtual console games). Last year I bought my HD camcorder and it really choked my computer (Intel C2D E6600, 4GB ram, 8800GTS 640MB) so I knew I had to end up doing an upgrade. My new computer is just a small improvement because the program I use doesn't take advantage of the extra cores and extra RAM. The overclock only gives me about a 30% boost in comparison to my dual core 2.4GHz PC.

Hopefully next year video editing programs will be 64-bit plus have CUDA.

 Nice setup. How do you have the drives set up? Are you just running the OS on the SSD?

Have you tried setting up a raid 0 config? I basically get close to 400mb throughput using my raid setup.

I have the OS + main programs on the SSD, then on the 1TB drive I have a 100GB partition for my other Program Files directory and the last partition is my data partition.

Is it easy to set up so you can access the programs and data on the 1 TB drive?

Do you have a SSD too? I'm very curious about these set ups.

Nah they are too expensive to raid. I just purchased 4 regular hdd.

You do notice the difference with raid 0. However, it is very risky as if one of the hdd goes, bye bye data. It happened to me before. :crying: :crying:

As such, I now have a raid 5 partition setup at the end of the drives for safety too.

Where's a good place to get a quick education on the various RAID setups? Is raid zero the fastest setup?

I just googled it. It's pretty easy to setup. You just enable raid in bios. Then enter a separate menu during bootup and configure the raid types. Raid zero basically splits the data across all of your drives. As such, it accesses them all at once (much faster performance). Raid five creates parity, which means even if one hard drive was lost, the system will rebuild the data on the new drive once you plug it in (faster than single drive but much slower than raid 0). Once your raid config is setup, it will basically act like virtual hard drives. Your system will only see the hard drives as one drive, the raid drive.

Intel has quite a bit of info on their site about it too, as their chip has it built in. Raid 0 is perfect for what Bob-KhaHan is using his PC for.
