sounds more like vote buying to me

President Obama said this week that his health care plan won't cover illegal immigrants, but argued that's all the more reason to legalize them and ensure they eventually do get coverage.

He also staked out a position that anyone in the country legally should be covered - a major break with the 1996 welfare reform bill, which limited most federal public assistance programs only to citizens and longtime immigrants.

"Even though I do not believe we can extend coverage to those who are here illegally, I also don't simply believe we can simply ignore the fact that our immigration system is broken," Mr. Obama said Wednesday evening in a speech to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. "That's why I strongly support making sure folks who are here legally have access to affordable, quality health insurance under this plan, just like everybody else.

Mr. Obama added, "If anything, this debate underscores the necessity of passing comprehensive immigration reform and resolving the issue of 12 million undocumented people living and working in this country once and for all."

Republicans said that amounts to an amnesty, calling it a backdoor effort to make sure current illegal immigrants get health care. continues in article

As long as hospitals are legally obligated to provide care to anyone that enters their doors, We will pay for care for people who can't afford it, one way or another.

Republicans see a backdoor move toward 'amnesty'

Republicans see death panels, too. ;)

I said it before, but since I think it applies here, too, I'll say it again. Why do people think there is a problem with illegals getting health coverage but don't have a problem with covering welfare recipients who have never payed a dime in taxes beyond sales tax? They are both mooching.

I can understand the economic differentiation, but ethically, there is not a leg to stand on if you claim that illegals shouldn't get coverage and citizens who don't pay income tax should. In order for this to make ethical sense, you have to argue that some people are better or more deserving than others simply because of their birth country. That claim, in my opinion, is inherently unethical in itself.

Well - not all welfare recipients have never paid taxes. Especially in this economic climate.

But otherwise - you're right on.

Of course. I understand some people lose their job and go on unemployment temporarily. I'm talking about people that have never worked and payed income tax.

I remember in the early 90's when my then-husband was out of work and our son was about four. There was a 19 year old girl in the office I worked at and this was her first job. Shortly after she began work, she found herself pregnant and immediately went down to DHHR and signed up for a medical card. After her baby was born, she got HUD assistance for an apartment, got food stamps and she also had WIC. Meanwhile, my ex and I (who had paid taxes for more than 20 years) couldn't even get a medical card for our son. Just really pi$$ed me off.

For the same reason Americans don't get coverage in Canada (but Canadian citizens who don't pay income tax do, I imagine)

Why do you hate borders?

No one on welfare never pays taxes. Welfare was reformed and is temporary. one of the FAQ's on the welfare sites explain "did you know this is temporary?" Yes they cut you off after you've been given a few months to find another job

Anyone with Caucasoid background is illegal (where's everyone's brains?)! No one here speaks the native tongue yet somehow Europeans move into a country, refuse to speak the native language, throw the inhabitants into parcels of the worst land and we're worried about illegal immigrants? We're the illegal immigrants! European peoples took land, lied to the inhabitants, did not honor contracts, slaughtered the owners and starved them out.... and now somehow this holier than thou attitude erupts only a couple hundred years later; a flash in history....

I think Mexicans have more Native American blood than Caucasoid peoples! (just being devils advocate here)!

I'm definitely an illegal immigrant!

It is taking us years to get my wife's then over 21 unmarried son with a lot more years ahead of us here due to some very strict immigration laws. I do not see these laws changing at the whelm of one president. Do you?

If we have no immigration laws, sure all of my USC friends that married foreigners and I will all join together and sue the USCIS for all fees and expenses we incurred to bring our spouses here legally. But sure the outcome would be, it was the law at the time. It also was the law at the time that these people came here illegally, so they should suffer the same fate. Really don't see our immigration laws disappearing, more bad rumors from a party that is grabbing at every straw they can think of. And yes, they want to see Obama fail, the hell with the American people, their only interest is getting back into office, the dirty rotten SOB's. And I suppose you like being screwed by them.

Tell me you're joking.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

I'm not a fan of any politician. Period! They've all screwed the people over sooo many times just like they crewed the original inhabitants of this country. It's the European way to lie and conquer and manipulate and exploit...the new world order now! What a great culture has flooded the world!

Ever try to sue the federal government? You can't! That's one reason I interviewed there last week...no need to carry malpractice insurance :-)

There was talk of allowing illegals to buy their way into the country by paying a "fine" for entering illegally and then allowing them to initiate the immigration process. If you had to come up with a price tag that the illegals would have to pony up, how much would it be? Would this make the amnesty pill easier to swallow? or is it still a toxic dose?

European way? First off, Americans are nothing like Europeans; so don't even go there.

The rest is just ridiculous. Anyone dumb enough to disregard thousands of years of achievements is a clown. Nothing else to it.
