My fiancee is applying for her social security number; she did not obtain temporary authorization to work. The application for a Social Security Number requests that you check a box describing your citizenship as : "Legal Alien Allowed to Work", "Legal Alien Not Allowed to Work", or "Other". If you check either of the last 2, the instructions say you have to provide documentation from a Government agency explaining.

My first thought was that the correct answer would be "legal alien not allowed to work", but given the requirement for additional documentation, I am second guessing myself. What is the correct answer?

Thanks!

Legal alien NOT allowed to work. After she gets her green card or EAD you can go back and get the changed along with her name (if she changes her name) Apply for the SSN in her name exactly as it appears on her passport. Even if she will change her name later or even if you are already married. Trying to change the name without documentation throws the SS adminstration into all kinds of fits. Get the card in her maiden name and then change it later. The number will not change

Leader, you will get better answers if you post your own topics...well more anyway

The green card takes 3-6 months, usually, after filing AOS. It CAN take longer depending on AP which is required, if any. My wife had her green card in hand 4 months after arriving in the USA, 2 months after filing AOS. Our son (K-2 to follow) just got his "welcome letter" Saturday and he filed for AOS in mid July. Waiting for the green card to be produced and sent. It is good to get the SSN but that does not authorized work. You need the green card or EAD. You can apply for an EAD with your AOS and it is usually received within 90 days.
