I entered the US on my K1 Visa on August 21st! I'm now living in Arlington. Our civil ceremony is planned for Sept. 19th. I do have some questions, some are silly, but I don't want to mess anything up!

1. When should I get my SSN? Before we get married, or after?

2. When I apply for my AOS, do I now use my new married name?

3. What is the process of changing my name? My passport etc will still have my unmarried name... is that okay?

I know... still so much to do! I feel like it will never end!

Thanks as always for all the help from the Vjers!

1. When should I get my SSN? Before we get married, or after? After.

2. When I apply for my AOS, do I now use my new married name? You also apply for AOS after you get married.

3. What is the process of changing my name? My passport etc will still have my unmarried name... is that okay? You can change your name when you apply for AOS by writing your name the way you want it to be on the forms. It is ok, when travelling just take your marriage certificate with you, and greencard. Or you can request a new passport with your new name on it.

I know... still so much to do! I feel like it will never end!

1. When should I get my SSN? Before we get married, or after? That really depends. Is there any reason why you would need your SSN immediately? Otherwise, wait until after the marriage so you don't have to go back and have your name changed on it later. I'm in that situation and its a pain.

2. When I apply for my AOS, do I now use my new married name? If you want your GC to be in your married name then file all your AOS paperwork in your married name

3. What is the process of changing my name? My passport etc will still have my unmarried name... is that okay? I'm leaving my passport in my married name for now so I don't have to bother changing it when it still has a 5 year validity. Just book all your travel in your maiden name.

I know... still so much to do! I feel like it will never end!

Amylou, i have heard that you should get ss# befor you're married and change the name on ss card after you are married. i'm not sure the reason but hopefully someone will come along and explain the advantage of doing that. Good luck to you. Mari joe

Lived in Arlington (Court House area) when I first moved down here. Now In Falls Church. Welcome to VA!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I would recommend getting your SSN before getting married as well. The SSA has problems when people get married and apply for a number and often insist upon waiting until the individual has their EAD or their green card. Right now your K-1 and your name all agree with the name that is on file with USCIS. Getting the SSN in the same name won't be an issue. Then after you get married, you can bring the marriage certificate into the SSA and have the name changed. This way, if you run into any problems and they won't issue you a SSN in the new name you still have a SSN which may be required to open or be added to bank accounts, to qualify for medical benefits during the window that opens when you and husband marries, to get a Driver's License (some States require SSN before they will issue DL). It will save you a lot of hassle to get the card now and get the name on it changed afterwards then to have to fight to get the card in your married name from the beginning.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
