Since our waiting time for US passports is long over, we are now waiting for our passports to expire. Bet that time flies by like crazy.

Unfortunately, I might be one of those cases where there is no resolution, despite the countless wasted hours spent on the phone with every possible screwed up government agency (ha, do I sound like a US citizen now?) Nobody seems to know where my certificate is.

I have called the Passport information center at least 1/2 dozen times, they reported it to the passport agency in San Francisco and told me I would be contacted directly by the SF agency at some point (which still hasn't happened - and the only way to contact them is by writing a letter since they do not take calls ???). I have filed numerous claims with anyone & everyone possible. I spoke with our local postal office, they reported it to our carrier who was supposed to double-check every single empty mail receptacle in our subdivision for possible misplacement, since our neighborhood is still being developed and there are quite a few unassigned mail receptacles. Nothing came out of that. I made my way up to the delivery supervisor, he wasn't able to tell me anything I hadn't heard countless times already.

All I know at this point is that my certificate was in fact mailed out on Sept 16th, same day as my passport. After that, no one is willing to assume responsability. USPS wants a tracking number, which I obviously don't have since the pasport agency mails out the certificates first class, just like any other piece of junk! The passport agency says they mailed the certificate on 9/16 and it's out of their hands. All I got is apologies, regrets and "I understand, ma'm" ...

So when all is said and done, I will simply have to cough up another $380 in order to file for a certificate replacement and pay for someone else's incompetence. How f*cked up is that?

Sorry for my rambling, pretty frustrated at this point. And to think we were THIS close to be completely done dealing with all this.

It is my personal opinion but I would collect all facts and figures and send them out to the CIS informing them of the mail lost containing the certificate and press them to issue you a certificate no charge. Your one big proof is your passport that states that certificate was in fact sent to the passport agency.

When I got my certificate about a decade ago, the CIS misspelled my name wrong and then asked me to pay for the replacement, I called in the few people at CIS and finally got the fix for free.

I would say it is worth the try before having to pay for passport agency's incompetence, a doc of this importance should never be in transition over ordinary snail mail. Call up your house rep and senators, and ask for their help as their "new" constituent and one that will likely/not likey vote for them in the next election....

It's crazy, our city clerk has a certificate hanging on the wall, certified by the DOS to take applications, but they don't trust her to make a copy of your certificate and include that with the package. Can only wonder who in New Orleans is certified by the DOS to say whether your certificate is original or not, and doesn't the USCIS keep of record of that?

I did put my wife's certificate in a stiff plastic folder taped on two sides so you can still pull it out, she pulled it out and was ready to staple it to the application. I stopped her, told her that certificate would cost 400 bucks, leave it in the plastic projective cover and staple to the plastic cover, she did to that. We paid for expedient service, wife's passport came in overnight and I had to sign for it, but no certificate on the inside. Three days later it came in a brown envelop but still in my plastic protective cover, that was a miracle via first class mail. The passport is cheap compared to this certificate, and the return address was identical to that of the passport. What are they thinking? Couldn't they just as well put the certificate in with that stiff overnight envelop? Even saved a buck.

The reason why I am so paranoid, they did lose my original birth certificate, tried to get that back and got ran around in circles, but that was only eight bucks. From that experience was tempted to go to Chicago and apply in person, but that trip would have cost us well over 400 bucks, they get you one way or the other.

Did have to comment to our city clerk, she has known me for years, they actually trust you to compare her photos with her face? Shouldn't you also include my wife in the envelop so their experts can do that comparison? When you think about it, the whole process is idiotic. Don't brother your congressman with stuff like this, a war in Iraq and economy problems is what you will hear.

Just wondering if this is wishfull thinking or not...

I applied for my passport using the normal processing service on 17th September. I keep checking the status of my passport on the usps website and it just says it is still being processed.

I really want to travel next Tuesday (20th) and according to the website it hasn't even been shipped yet. So, I am hoping that maybe they have sent my passport but they haven't updated the system yet (like what happens with the USCIS website) or is the website accurate and they really are still processing it?

So, has anyone received their passport when the website still says it is still being processed?

I found the passport office very good at providing up to date details of the passport process. It was the post office that really screwed things up.

I would call the passport office - and yes, you can speak to a real person! and tell them you need to travel on the 20th and can the passport be returned to you by courier by that date? It has been long enough to process it by now. Good luck.

Babonsi - I am so, so sorry! That is terrible! I was hoping that it would have shown up like my wayward passport. I would definitely contact your Senator or Representative at this time and get them involved. At the very least, the Post Office should accept some liability here and cough up the funds to pay for your new certificate. After all, it is thier employees who have lost it and they need to accept responsibility. The other option would be trying to get re-imbursed through the passport office for sending the document back by unsecured means - definitely a contribution to identity theft - but since it did get to the post office I suspect you will have more luck pursuing that option.

I would also notify your local office of USCIS that your Certificate of Citizenship has gone missing in the mail so they can be aware if someone tries to use it for illegal purposes.
