no one looked at us like we were from another planet

We had crowds around us at times India but they weren't hostile for the most part just curious.

we tend to blend in with the people in india i guess thats one reason killing a student in front of us was not an issue to them

Of all the countries I've lived in or traveled to it is the US where I've felt the least safe.

Didn't have anything bad happen to me in the Philippines but had a lot of bad things happened to me abroad that hasn't ever happened to me in the States.

Almost carjacked in Italy.

Pickpocketed and mugged in Hungary.

Assaulted on the street by a hooker in Vietnam.

Numerous taxi rip offs in various countries.

Grossly overcharged for dinner in Vietnam.

Bag stolen in the UK.

The difference is I know what to look for in the U.S. as a bad situation but don't always know it abroad. Plus, Americans are seen as rich abroad but in the U.S. I'm nowhere near rich.

That seems to happen everywhere, even in the US. Of course, getting grossly overcharged for anything is more of a point of honor, than real money, at least in the Philippines. I mean, arguing with the taxi driver whether to pay the meter, or a flat rate, is generally the difference between 150 PP and 200 PP, about one dollar US.

I dress American, American t-shirts, hoodies, etc. When I tell people I'm American, they say - "You're not American! American's can speak Spanish like you do. Your PARENTS are COLOMBIAN and they brought you to America!!" "You're a COLOMBIAN!"

I felt much safer when Bush was president. He was always talking about our safety, thought for awhile he was going to lock all of us in padded cells so we would be safe.

Manufacturers are certainly concerned about our safety, don't believe that stuff about our product liability laws. I didn't know it was unsafe to jam a toothpick in my ear until I read the safety concern literature.

Definitely felt safer in Canada. I loved to go for a walk in the evenings or after the sunset. It was always safe. Here, women by themselves risk abduction even near their own homes. Children are shot by guns in the schoolyard. The police need to wear bullet proof vests. I miss the freedom that comes from feeling safe. It doesn't seem to exist here. (And we live in what is considered a safe neighbourhood).

Goodness, where do you live?! From what you described I don't consider that a safe neighborhood!

I felt pretty safe in Vietnam- except when the police were doing their random checks in the hotels before my wife and I were officially married. But where I live you can still go for a walk after sunset, whenever. As a matter of fact, things were pretty quiet around here until just recently a swimsuit model from Buena Park (which is 5 miles from my house) was killed by a Canadian!!

The good news is he was found dead!

Our timeline:

2/88: We met in Sydney, Australia at a youth hostel! He's Finnish, I'm American-both were in our early 20s at the time and fresh out of college (so couldn't afford to visit each other's countries after that!). We had a three-day romance, then went our separate ways. He actually was going to Sydney a week later, but decided at the last minute to cut his trip short in another country and go early. Wow.

1988-1998: Wrote "snail mail" letters/sent Xmas cards, but lived our separate lives. I married someone else, divorced in 2006...he lived with someone for years and then that ended.

10/08: Because of a series of random life events, I Googled my Finn Man and found him (but no link to his email, and the website his name was on was in Estonian so I couldn't even read it!). It took me two weeks to find a link to someone else, who forwarded my email to him (we were both single at the time thankfully!!!!). The email went to his spam folder but he happened to check it that day and responded back to me immediately! This was after 10 years of no contact and almost 21 years of not seeing each other after we first met.

11/08-5/09: We traveled back and forth to visit each other. Love at first (second?) sight!

7/09: Married in Helsinki, Finland...after meeting randomly 21 1/2 years ago and finding each other again!!!!!

8/13/09: I-130 sent!!!!!!!!!

Rest is on my timeline!

i have never felt unsafe in India, but my husband never let me out of his sight when we went out. he also would not let me go out alone, always had a chaperrone. when i was there for work in 2007, we never had to worry about anything. our office provided us with a car and driver who would take care of us. so i don't know if i would feel the same if i were by myself  at least in india, they usually forewarned us about rioting, which i never quite understood. "on such and such day, americans (or other foreigners) need to stay home because there will be rioters at such and such place."

Give Generously, Live Fully, Laugh Often, Love Completely...AND PRAY ALWAYS!!!

The US is one of the least safe countries in the world. I really don't know why so many people are in a hurry to immigrate and call the US their home. Drug cartel violence is spilling over into quiet, middle-class neighborhoods, but the drug lords bring the battle here and just don't care about any collateral damage that occurs when they are taking vengeance against each other, running torture chambers in the house next door to you, kidnapping for ransoms, getting rid of bodies in acid tanks, etc. You think this is a made up movie? Think Again.

Go to Columbia and have a worry free, loving time, Ken! Good Luck.

I would not feel safe to go out in India by myself nor would my husband let me. I mostly felt safe when my husband was with me in India, but even then there had been moments during a trip that did not feel totally safe. I feel extremely safe where I live in the US.

Married since 9-18-04(All K1 visa & GC details in timeline.)

Depends on where you live in the US. I feel very safe where I live and work. Although.. unsafe areas are only a few miles away (in about every direction ).

This is the nature of the problem. THe "safe" areas are being infiltrated by violent gangs, who are trying to blend into cookie-cutter housing developments. When they move into your neighborhood, their violence also moves in. Police are being laid off; prisoners are being released early from jail and prisons to "save" money, and the list goes on and on. If you found a safe place to live, then congrats. Being complacent about it is not advisable. Good luck and stay safe.
