Pakistani Taliban Leader Killed By U.S. Missile?

The leader of the Pakistani Taliban may have been killed in a Predator drone missile strike. Then again, maybe he wasn't.

Officials are investigating reports of the death of Baitullah Mehsud, the alleged mastermind behind a lot of violence in Pakistan, including the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

NPR's Mary Louise Kelly reported the following on the network's newscast:

• Baitullah Mehsud is believed to be in his late 30s and he's made a name for himself in terrorist circles...
• ... Pakistan's leaders say they view him as the country's top internal security threat.
• Baitullah Mehsud has also threatened to attack the U.S., although there are questions about his organization's ability to strike so far from its base.
• In any case, the U.S. State Department has offered a $5 million bounty for him. And his death or capture would mark a significant success for U.S. and Pakistani spy agencies.
• Reports of Mehsud's death are still unconfirmed. U.S. officials say they're awaiting physical evidence, such as DNA confirmation.

There were reports earlier in the week that Mehsud's second wife was killed in the drone attack. So it's interesting, to say the least, that now we're getting reports of Mehsud's death.
