Not to rant or rave, this is a sore subject with me, living conditions and the food were horrible, if as a "troop" if you lost your weapon, a shoe, or had a uniform ruined, you had to replace it out of your measly paycheck. Combat pay was a couple of bucks more than standard pay.

It's not the troops that are costing us money, it's those damned civilian contractors, and in Iraq, misplacing billions of dollars that is costing us a fortune, and now they have hired civilian killers that can get away with murder where a troop can face severe charges if not following the rules of engagement. And our troops have to wear those damned uniforms driving around in unprotected military vehicles where they stick out like a sore thumb. Really have a dual standard.

Nothing wrong with reducing the defense budget but to finance health care? That's a silly thought seeing that there is reportedly more waste on healthcare year after year than what the entire defense budget eats up. If you'd cut the defense budget by 100bn and pump that into this existing system of ours, roughly 33bn of that would then go straight to waste.

The right thing to do would seem to attack the very waste that's there. There's plenty of it - reportedly 7 times that lousy 100bn that everyone gets worked up over. Actually, attacking that waste, the 100bn needed would really be 66bn and the remaining 634bn (700bn saved - 66bn spent) would be put to great use to pay down that debt and get the nation on sound fiscal footing again.

The renowned Institute of Medicine even estimates that almost one-third of all medical care in the US -- or about $700 billion worth -- is "pure waste." This figure is one-and-a-half times the German federal budget and even exceeds the US military budget.

How's about we go the other way: cut spending in all other areas to zero and put everything into the military budget.

Let everything take care of itself in that self-assured, "personal responsibility" way.
