Sorry - if this is a redundant post.

The cover letter as posted on this forum is pretty straight forward outlining the enclosures in the packet. Does it hurt if I explain my case in the cover letter for the most part and continue the 'how we met' in question 18? Or should the cover letter be as brief as it has been posted?

Thanks!

I used exactly as the guide shows, it mentions the addendum to the question that you can type on a separate sheet of paper to further explain how you met.

Somewhere in the USCIS material it specifically instructs not to give explanations in the cover letter, which basically should state what is being applied for, table of contents and contact info. Always include explanations in an attachment, referring to "line # ___".

The cover letter (optional) should be a cover letter. Attachments for answers should be separate.

I found a good guide on some other site, that said the cover letter should detail all the stuff that was to follow.

Any explanation should be a separate thing that the cover letter just lists as a supporting item.

Here's that example letter. I used it, and mine was a lot longer because I included a bunch of extra information for our particular case (passport for dependent child, ADIT photo of dependent child, divorce certificate, translation of divorce certificate, statement of translator for divorce certificate, name change1, name change 2, etc etc)
