I met my wife to be a couple of years ago in China. I have made 5 trips since then and we are going to get married on the next trip. She wants a traditional Chinese wedding. What do I need to take? She said I would need to bring a singleness certificate. I can't find much information about this. Is there an official form? I found in 1 place that it needs to be notarized. Is this true? Who has to notarize it if this is true? Can anyone help me I am running out of time?

I believe you can get letter that prove that you are single and eligible to get married from the U.S. consulate in China (at least that's how it can be obtained in Taiwan). You may want to check the consulate's official website for details. As far as the traditional Chinese wedding is concerned, there are no set of universal rules for the entire China. The tradition varies from providence to providence. So it's best to check with your fiancee for details. You should start plan and talk to her about the wedding now. It's better to prepare more things than you really need rather than missing things on the day of the wedding. Some Chinese elders are quite picky about the mistakes occurred during the wedding.

If they also require your birth certificate, make certain they accept your birth certificates. We were considering getting married in Peru before deciding the K-1 route, but I would have needed to have my BC sealed by the Secretary of State of my state, then by the Peruvian Consulate in Chicago - Process! That in addition to the Certificate of Singleness (can be picked up at the US Embassy in the foreign country). Needless to say, we decided on the K-1 route, and we are going to have a celebration with his family in Peru after he is allowed to travel.

1. Find your Chinese consulate they have very clear (if difficult to understand initially) requirements.

2. State (Affidavit of Single Status A.S.S. ) in their format, your name, job, residence and that you are single (include details) this is notarized .

3. The notary on the A.S.S. (you stated the truth in front of them) must be certified. This is done by the county clerk. Gold seal here.

4. The county clerk must be certified by the state. APOSTILLE. This is the gold AND CONFERS INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION of your statement IAW international law.

5. The consulate will accept nothing less. They will stamp it; take your cash, next please.

6. In China, only the stamped A.S.S. is of value. Divorce death whatever English documents mean nothing except in USA. The A.S.S. should be translated in China.

7. You are now a single man in China law. Do not loose your A.S.S.

8. Do not be surprised when you are married. It is over before you see it coming.

blessings....

Most US state-level Secretary of State offices have websites and they usually have the Apostille instructions and costs on their websites. I had to have three documents Apostilled from three different states (a state will only Apostille documents that are issued in that state). Due to the information on the internet it turned out to be a pretty simple process. Just make sure you follow their instructions exactly. Best wishes and God bless,

Rick
