IIRC, it's called a Cossack. Never had one, the thought of Vodka and beer churns my stomach.

What's it called in Po-russkiy, tovarish?

Ive never been one to enthusiastically mix beer and liquor

I know better, but she insisted and who am I to say no?

Does anyone know what it's called when you drop the shot of vodka into beer and chug it? I can't remember. I always wanna call it otvertka but that's screwdriver. Is it prosh or something like that?

My ex-partners in Belarus used to say "vodka without beer is wasted money". I am told that is a popular saying in Eastern Europe. No one suggested making a cocktail of the two that I recall

Its very strange that so few Russian drinks get mentioned in this thread.

you mean like "vodka- cold" in hip flask

If that's what floats your boat, fine. I'm fond of cognacs from Dagestan, especially Лезгинка. Armenian cognac's are really good too -- but nowadays maybe its a stretch to consider them Russian. (Russian is the dominant language in the Armenian liquor store here in Denver, though, and the labels are usually trilingual with Russian, English, and, I'm guessing, Armenian.)

Baltica beers are good, but not distinctive enough for me to go out of my way to buy them. Anyone know where you can buy Dagestani cognac here in the USA?

Not my boat, but it is the most common drink I have been offered in Russia, on the bench in airports, on the trans-siberian rail, on the buses and trolleys, and in the villages as part of celebrations.

You're right on that! The best vodka I ever had was some homemade stuff made by my stepson's paternal grandfather on the occasion of the stepson's wedding. Vodka is cheaper than their domestic cognacs. But seems now that my closest friends there, with one exception, don't drink vodka but do like their cognac.

Maybe its a status thing, cognac has a much higher status than vodka. One is made from grapes the other from potatoes or grains.

Yorsh. That's it!

And 50/50? Wow! The girl mixing mine didn't have enough hair on her chest for a 50/50 concoction. We kept it at shot glasses dumped in small beer glasses so it was probably more like 75/25.... but it still did the trick!
