Captain,

I've seen this in other blog sites - the ability to vote by a thumbs up or down, whether a particular post was helpful or not. The post itself displays the number of thumbs up and thumbs down. This might help alleviate some of the confusion when immigration questions are asked and multiple answers are given.

Would you be able to add such a feature?

However maybe it should somehow be limited as far as aprroval rating from members who have been there done that? rather than someone New coming in a giving a thumbs up not knowing what they are really giving the thumbs up for?

My 2 cents for what it's worth :)

Why is it that the only one who can stop the crying is the one who started it in the first place?

I'm sure the Capt. could limit voting to those who've posted a number of posts already. :)

I thought of an idea of VJ Mentors before and everyone shot it down. But this idea focuses on the advice given, rather than on the person giving it. However, people will come to know and see who tends to post helpful advice in the immigration forums. :)

Likey the thumbs up -- NO likey the VJ mentors: it would put way too much pressure on said mentors, and it just would not work

Yeah....I'm not suggesting it now, but the same principle behind this idea of a thumbs up or down vote for posts. To give some direction to members asking questions here and being overwhelmed with advice or answers that sometimes are not good at all. :)

I agree 100% if you look sometimes a newbie posts and then there are dozens of replys saying something different in bout every other one. I can imagine how this can be overwhelming especially when you are waiting for you loved one or have a form problem. How do you know who to listen too? Fantastic Idea........

Absolutely...Sounds like a fantastic idea. It shouldn't be that difficult to implement this. Definately one of the best ideas I have seen here.

Sorry to be the voice of dissent, but rating posts suck. It encourages cliques, and is almost a popularity contest.
Si 100% to this, man. Just think if the anti-lawyers-under-all-circumstances crowd ganged together. (Oh, wait; they already do that.) "If we do not gang together, we shall almost surely gang separately, si man."

DEFINITION FOR THE DAY, SI MAN

Popular tree, n. - any of several fast-growing, well-liked deciduous trees of the genus Populus that do well in poplarity contests, si man.

DEFINITION #2 FOR THE DAY, SI MAN

Civil sturgeon, n. - a polite, caviar-producing fish.

Nonsense. The voting is anonymous so how could it be clique-ish? Even those here who are on friendly terms, there is varying viewpoints and disagreements. We're all adults here...this isn't high school.

People would band together on the side and discuss how to vote on certain topics and certain posters.
We're all adults here...
...some with lobotomies, sadly...

The issue really boils down to what voters would be voting for (or on). I would vote for (or against) the content of a post but might also be strongly influenced by its grammar and presentation. Others would vote for humor or the throwing-in of a favored Internet or foreign-language phrase. Still others would vote for posts by windbags who are all over the site and who thus appear knowledgeable. Accordingly, ratings of posts would be meaningless. Also, what about posts that consist of the ENTIRE preceding thread and a new addition of only a "thumbs up" icon or a "me, too"? How are we supposed to rate THOSE?

I would consider it more worthwhile to "pin," or make into FAQs, subjects that occur over and over and OVER (financial support, what to put under "length of duration of trip" on the I-131 application, and so forth). When I last looked, a lot of the currently pinned threads contained a lot of now-irrelevant garbage ("can we pin this, Captain, please?"); could these all be cleaned up and only the most ACCURATE, WELL-STATED posts be left in? And a Pitcairn Island subforum, si man?
