Ok, a lot of you are simply failing to grasp what Robin means by 'donor state'. Either that or the ignorance is willful.

A state is a donor state when the sum of the contributions to the federal treasury of all its residents/businesses exceeds the amount of money received by the state from the federal government.

This is a subject that has been broached on VJ many times before, but apparently you've all forgotten.

thank you, AJ. It's funny to listen to "fiscal conservatives" rant about California when their states (this is the generic "their" not related to Charles specifically) receive largesse from the federal budget, partly at this state's expense. Really, it's only the Texans who deserve to be smug.

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

Ok, you two are talking past each other, about two totally different things.

apparently she thinks i am kansas.

Nah - you just made it about you. Relax!

so why the rant about kansas, knowing i live in kansas?

but back to my original statement - donate money to the cali treasury.

there was a list of states Charles. Really stop being so sensitive - don't you own the panty-unwinder after all?

funny you should mention sensitivity when someone talks about the cali budget and you come out guns blazing, foaming at the mouth about cali is a donor state.

Yup. Texas does it right. Kansas and Oklahoma, not so much.

I could be wrong, but Texas is a lot more politically homogenous than California in order to get it done. There really is a sharp divide between places like San Francisco/LA and places like Fresno/Orange County and the state constitution doesn't help.

There are many good arguments for splitting Cali into a number of smaller states.

how am I being sensitive? I am just commenting on the subject at hand. this is just one part of it. You made it All About You. I know this may be hard to process but I didn't stop and think "how can I annoy Charles?" before I typed it out.

Kansas takes a lot of money for farm subsidies. you live in kansas. are you somehow part of that equation or do you just happen to live there?

Actually, if you split it as described here, you'll end up with Cali splitting into 4 states, only 1 of which might be GOP.

i think your employment in the military is pretty well established on this board.

last time I checked, most of KS subsidies were for corn, wheat and soybeans. Since I don't eat bread and avoid HFCS like the plague I'm sure I can live just fine on the crops grown locally, plus I'll have wine to accompany it.

What happens to the northern, nothern/eastern, and northern/western (non central area (central valley)) areas? do these locations just become part oregon, nevada, and hawaii (nearest state to the west)?

  • San Diego/Orange County/Inland Empire (socially conservative, Hispanic, heavily military)
  • Greater LA (Hollywood and Hispanics, very liberal)
  • San Francisco/Silicon Valley (Liberal, but very dynamic and market oriented)
  • Central (Conservative, Kansas-like)

Can we all just quit the bickering and agree that everywhere is screwed apart from Texas?
