so when u compare their rates with other places,is it a good deal?

Basically, it cuts out the middleman. Think wholesale as opposed to retail. CH works with a fluctuating exchange rate. The banks pick one rate for the day and stick with it. Then they add on their revenue markup. In contrast, Custom House follows the market throughout the day, so you can pick a preferred exchange rate and they will contact you when it reaches that point. Or, if you're just doing a small trade, you can refresh the exchange rate and then decide when to lock in. What happened with me was the broker basically watched the market for me (this is for large $$ amounts only), then called when he perceived that this was the best exchange rate for my situation. They're a fabulous organization.

staff is in Victoria BC,very professional, will even walk you thru registration and making trades, al of which is very easy!!

I used to make a trade feel like a casino game, lol. you state how much $$ you want to transfer, and it gives you the rate, BUT that rate quoted is only good for like 30 seconds, as well there isa REFRESH button, so if ya feel lucky, hit refresh, the rate my go up, down or chg,lol you can press it all day long, if ya want, lol OR just cancel the trade all together

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I swear to God, we need to claim a commission.

We did have a TD bank U.S. dollar account, which we closed when we moved here. It was handy dandy for checking the exchange rate, just like you guys were talking about, you can just refresh the screen and get up to the minute rates, then decide if you want to transfer it to your Canadian account or U.S. account etc.

Yes, so I don't know what else they will want, but they emailed me for my SSN - which I called and gave them. He gave me a brief overview of the service, sounds easy enough. Said they will now look at it and email me again in a couple of hours.

Oh weird thing - in the email it gave an account number, in the subject line, which he asked for. I gave it to him, he repeated it back. Not my account number apparently, not even close. Anyway he looked it up by name and gave me the correct account number.

Yes, thats what I do and the rates are good. I then just write a US cheque drawn from that account to my bank in the US. All very convenient with no other fees and works very well.

I signed up when still in Canada, and provided my fiance's US bank account.... when I moved here it became joint, so I didn't need to worry. Before I moved, I just started to transfer $$ here and there to his account

I just signed up for CustomHouse

They sure do want a lot of verification!!

Yes alot... it's kind of annoying but well worth it in the end! They have to prevent money laundering, fraud, etc.

I'm going to sign up before I leave, and use Tim's account for now. I assume it would be easy to change later if I needed too?

What kind of I.D and verification to they need? I hope I don't have to scan anything to send them, as my scanner/printer broke a while back, and I don't want to buy a new one! The closure of the sale of my house happens the day before I move, so I will want to transfer some money to help pay for wedding/honeymoon/AOS...

I think you need at least 2 photo IDs... I scanned/e-mailed my passport bio page and DL... it wasn't clear enough and they asked me for a better copy, pretty strict that they need to see your photo clearly

I scanned my DL and Passport, but then I also showed them my marriage certificate and a utility bill to show my US address and new name.

I'm confused as to how to set up my bank accounts... but I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually.
