On shaky ground: Next big quake could hit Seattle

Seismologists monitoring Washington state's Olympic Peninsula say recent data suggests the next big earthquake might strike close to Seattle and the region's other major population centers, The Seattle Times reports.

The observation comes from a University of Washington team studying "episodic tremor and slip," which occurs when the massive land plates move one way, then "slip" another way. The Times reports that UW's research is the most ambitious attempt yet to understand where the mysterious tremors come from and what they could reveal about the risk of major earthquakes.

Researcher Tim Melbourne of Central Washington University said the possibility of the next "big one" is "an unknown everybody is worrying about."

Well, it's either a huge earthquake, Mt. Rainier exploding, and/or a tsunami. I suppose a giant earthquake could trigger the tsunami and maybe even a volcanic eruption.

Regardless, we're screwed.

..and never got to enjoy it.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

But then again before I moved here I lived in New Orleans.

Clearly I can't escape natural disasters.

I'd suggest the upper midwest, but we are prone to tornadoes.

I'm getting deja vu all over again. Didn't we just have this discussion? On some other thread, with some other posters?

I don't think so. Maybe. Huh.

Charles: you speak the truth. Though, if I'm honest, I still have money on the Sbux card a student gave me at the end of the year...
