Clothing Conversion from Russian to US

Getting ready to send my care package and I saw a really great Summer dress I would like to send. I know her size is 46. In the past I only sent her shirts and stuff like that because I knew she could wear a medium and that has worked out ok. The conversion chart I saw lists a Russian 46 as a US 10-12, do I chose the 10 or the 12?

I suppose if it's a little big she could take it in, yes?

She's a sporty girl, so her shoulders are a little wide, but she's not a big woman by any means; my shirts drown her.

For some reason a size 10-12 seems large to me, but i admit I'm confused.

Help.

Keep in mind the average "shape" of American women's dresses is for "rounder in the middle, smaller on top" and the average shape for Russian women's clothing is for "tight in the middle, bigger on top."

Another thing that's happened to American women's clothing in the last ten years or so is the sizes have actually changed. What used to be a 10-12 (like when the book was written that contains your conversion chart) is now like an 8. They've actually started making clothes bigger to accomodate fatter @$$es but still keep the same sizes. As a Russian 46, she'll probably fit an 8 just fine because Russian style is tight anyway.

The best way to do it is to have her send you actual measurements and then take those into the store and have the nice older woman (who remembers what women in America used to be shaped like) convert them into an American size. It won't be spot-on, but it'll be close enough.

Yeah, I think you're correct about the 8. Been hitting as many conversion calcuators as I can find, and the 8 is coming quite a bit.

Thanks

That's why I don't buy her dresses. I send iKobo and tell her to go shopping and have fun. She does and looks perfect.

*shrugs* In a way Slim is right, though. I pretty much only wear non-American brands because most American brands are designed for women who have a much different body type than me. I don't know why, but it seems that a lot of even thin women in America don't have very defined waists.

Women's sizes vary so much in America that every store will be a different thing, and sometimes it even varies by item. Ask for a size chart with bust/waist/hip measurements from the individual stores, maybe?

i agree all stores make sizes differently. it's best to find one store that fits you well. my fav is express.

my husband is wearing a shirt he bought in belarus that is an XL. it's very tight on him and he wears a 28" waist in american clothes. he would be swimming in an XL here.

on a side note- i've never found one piece of clothing in america that was made in america or by americans.

to the OP- i wouldn't by a girl clothes. no one has ever bought me clothing that i liked. but, then again, i'm extremely picky.

Yeah I can vouch for the American sizes being larger... Anna took me shopping while I was there and I tried to get into an XL... I looked like a Hot dog split on the ends. It's bad when they have to go to the back room to dig for your size because they don't sell that many XXL or 3XL shirts...

I'm just big boned! :P

Well, clothes in Europe and Russia aren't made in those places either. But they're all made to the specifications of the designers. Most American clothes for women for the past few years are focused on babydoll/trapeze styles, which are great if you want to conceal a stomach. Not so great if you look better in more fitted styles. I don't think I've ever bought anything at Express.

But yeah, I agree that most women prefer to buy their own clothes.

Definitely agreed. It's like the time my ex bought me a tool set. The thought was nice, but the set was completely not what I wanted, was of crappy construction, and mostly duplicated tools I already had. I like the Ikobo idea...send her money, tell her to buy herself something nice. If you really must get her clothing, make it an accessory. A scarf or something like that. Same goes for perfume by the way. If you know what perfumes she likes, go for it. But otherwise, don't buy it. Your odds of getting one she likes are pretty damn small.

But your odds of getting one you like to smell on her are much better. ;) "I will only wear this baby blue dress shirt if you spray on some sex kitten number 9".
