My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

It's very common to be processed without a single touch, as well as having lots of touches at the USCIS site and still have a long waiting time to get processed.

April filer here, new to this process. I have not taken the time to try to view touches, because it sounds like they are not really predictive of anything. Am I missing something?

No, you're probably not missing anything. Most people here sign up on the USCIS website, hoping they'll be one of the few whose case status is actually updated in a timely manner. I guess it's also somewhat reassuring to be able to check your case status and see that it still says the same thing it did yesterday, and not "Petition? What petition?". :P

You are basically correct about touches. They don't mean anything, other than somebody "touched" your petition, and the bar code was scanned as a result. A touch might mean something significant, like your petition is actually in a bin next to the adjudicators desk getting ready to be reviewed. Or, it might only mean that they moved it from one storage bin to another. In either case, it might be comforting to know that a touch means your petition has not vanished into the mysterious document "black hole" at USCIS.

I'm in the Removal of Conditions process right now, and have been approved without a change in my online status, or any e-mail from them, so in the end it doesn't really mean much to keep checking on touches, although it's true that seeing a touch might be comforting to know your case hasn't vanished into the black hole.
